Nursery at Oakhill Primary Academy

At a Glance

Woodland sessions, songs and time to follow a child's own interests give Oakhill's nursery its character. This is the nursery within Oakhill Primary Academy in Ardsley, Barnsley, with children joining from the term following their third birthday. It belongs to the school's Foundation Unit, where practitioners and support assistants work together in a large shared space.

Saplings includes Foundation Stage nursery provision. Each child in the Foundation Stage has a key person, giving families a specific adult who knows their child and keeps contact with home. That personal link sits alongside an early years approach that combines play with teaching led by adults.

The Nursery Day

Play has substantial space in the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach combines activities chosen by children with adult teaching and small-group work. In everyday terms, children explore, talk and try things out, while staff also work with them on particular learning targets. English, phonics and maths have daily teaching sessions within the early years timetable.

Rocket Phonics supplies the phonics programme, while books and nursery rhymes give children more opportunities to hear and use language. Music includes daily singing and movement, with weekly Charanga sessions using instruments and body percussion. These are concrete ways for children to join in before they can express everything in words.

Indoor and outdoor classrooms both contribute to learning. Children spend time outside whatever the weather, including sensory exploration and woodland sessions; the school grounds include woodland behind the buildings. Physical activities include balancing, climbing and throwing or catching balls. This gives movement a place alongside language and early number work.

In October 2024, Ofsted found that talking and singing with adults in Nursery helped children develop speaking and listening. The same inspection's improvement action applied across the school: some tasks repeated learning pupils had already mastered, slowing progress. For families, the relevant question is how activities are adjusted as their child becomes ready for the next challenge.

Care and Support

The key person works with children and their families, while Tapestry lets parents follow learning and the next steps being worked on. Early years parent workshops explain teaching methods, and stay-and-play sessions have also taken place. These offer different ways to connect home experiences with what children do in the classroom.

Additional needs are handled through the school's SEND arrangements. Parents begin by discussing concerns with the class teacher, with the SENDCo involved when further discussion is needed. Individual support plans are reviewed three times a year and shared at SEND parent meetings, giving families recurring opportunities to discuss provision.

Foundation Stage children receive fruit or vegetables daily. Water bottles should contain only water. The school encourages Foundation children to have school meals; choices include jacket potatoes, sandwiches and a traditional cooked option. A dedicated dining hall provides a separate space for lunch.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Barnsley Admissions, using the normal primary-school application process. The stated annual deadline is 15 January; an online application is the usual route, with a paper form for families having difficulty applying online. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Practical Information

Nursery has morning and afternoon sessions. Funded nursery education covers 15 hours a week from the term after a child's third birthday, with 30-hour provision offered to eligible families. Entry is typically in September, January or April.

To apply, contact Admissions and complete the nursery application form. Nursery visits can be arranged. For school enquiries, call 01226 284493 or email admin.oakhill@oakhillacademy.org.uk.

Uniform is expected for all children, and clothing should be labelled. Orders can go through the school office or Vortex. Refer to the school for current charges.
