Stories travel outdoors at Oakwell Rise: Nursery children bring book characters into their play, turning shared reading into conversation and games. Language gives this nursery its character. In March 2026, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision to be Strong standard, with children's talk, independence and early learning among its strengths.
The nursery takes children aged 3+ and forms part of Oakwell Rise Primary Academy on Doncaster Road in Barnsley. Both 15-hour and 30-hour funded places are offered, with eligibility applying to the additional hours. This gives families a choice between shorter sessions and full-time attendance.
Play and conversation work together here. Adults use spontaneous exchanges to extend children's thinking, including discussing how objects differ or resemble one another. Books also shape outdoor play: children remember characters and use those ideas independently, practising language and social skills beyond the reading session.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning through exploration with planned steps towards reading, writing and mathematics. In March 2026, children's different starting points were recognised promptly and teaching followed a carefully sequenced curriculum. Routines were taught directly, helping children concentrate and take more responsibility for their learning.
Rocket Phonics is used in EYFS, with daily sound sessions supported by large books, flashcards and practice booklets. The BLPP Oracy Intent and Progression Map also starts in Foundation Stage, giving speaking and listening a planned place in learning. Together, these approaches make talk and early reading recurring parts of the day.
Movement has its own timetable. Nursery PE takes place on Thursdays and Fridays with teaching staff and a sports coach, alongside outdoor activities each day. EYFS movement work includes balancing, hopping and handling balls, giving children opportunities to practise coordination as well as language.
The Nursery Manager also holds a Thrive Practitioner role. Across the school, the Thrive Approach supports children's understanding of feelings, friendships and choices, with practitioners responding to individual or group needs. In March 2026, early years children adapted quickly to behavioural expectations, while staff, families and other professionals worked together to support their progress.
For children attending full time, lunchtime lasts an additional 30 minutes between sessions. Families provide a packed lunch; the lunch period is included without an extra charge. It is a practical part of planning the longer day.
SEND support includes individual plans shared with parents and reviewed three times a year. Families can begin by discussing concerns with the class teacher, then involve the SENCO. EYFS classrooms have ramp access, a useful physical detail for families considering mobility needs. The school's main parent communication channel is Arbor Parent Portal, with texts also used for urgent messages.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Barnsley Admissions and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. For September 2026 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2026; that admissions cycle is now past.
Learning is sequenced from Nursery towards Reception, but curriculum continuity and the allocation of a school place are separate matters. Choose the nursery for the experience it offers now, and treat the Reception application as a distinct step.
Morning sessions run from 08:30 to 11:30; afternoons run from 12:00 to 15:00. The 15-hour entitlement begins in the term after a child's third birthday, with entry typically in September, January or April. Eligible families can use 30-hour provision, and privately funded top-up sessions are also offered. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery visits can be arranged before applying. Contact the office on 01226 281943 or info@oakwellriseacademy.co.uk. For a 30-hour funded place, families must supply their 11-digit eligibility code by the final day of the preceding term.
School uniform is expected for all children and may be bought new or used from any retailer. Label clothing clearly. The Den also houses a preloved uniform exchange, where families can swap items or take what they need.
