Nursery at Shawlands Primary School

Talented Turtles gives Shawlands Primary School’s nursery its own identity within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The nursery class is known as FS1, with nursery teachers listed separately from the wider early years teaching assistants. This is school-based provision on Shaw Street in Barnsley, with its own class identity rather than simply a smaller version of the primary school.
Practical independence gives the early years learning its character. In July 2024, children used an outdoor water pump for pouring and measuring, then put water back into a butt as part of clearing away. The activity combined exploration with responsibility: children took part in preparing their play and finishing the job afterwards.
A tyre swing added physical challenge. These examples belong to the wider early years provision, rather than being identified solely as nursery activities. They show what learning through play meant in practice: movement, measuring and handling resources for themselves. Ofsted’s July 2024 inspection found that children flourished in the early years learning environment.
Stories also gave children a say. Early years children chose the daily read-aloud story by voting, making collective decisions understandable through something immediately relevant to them. A seaside visit brought encounters with seagulls and paddling; associated writing included packing lists for a beach bag. Experiences and early literacy were connected. Phonics teaching was effective from the beginning of early years, giving the learning of sounds a place alongside practical exploration.
Nursery teachers sit within a wider early years staffing structure that includes teaching assistants providing classroom help and intervention work. A parent support advisor also has early years cover, welfare and attendance responsibilities. For families, this identifies several staff roles involved in supporting children beyond the teaching itself.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school’s support arrangements include WellComm for EYFS, alongside communication tools such as Makaton and visual timetables where needed. Support is matched to individual needs rather than presented as a programme every child follows.
Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, with the special educational needs coordinator joining discussions where appropriate. Regular meetings review progress and help families understand changes to support. Specialist advice can involve speech and language therapy or educational psychology. This gives parents a defined route into discussions about their child’s learning.
An October 2020 newsletter reported the recent introduction of hot meals for EYFS children. That is a historical change, rather than a description of today’s menu.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Shawlands’ admissions page directs applications to the local authority’s admissions team, so choosing Talented Turtles should remain a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Transition support is a separate matter. For children with SEND moving between classes, staff share information and carry existing strategies into the next classroom. Individual transition packages can be arranged, and some children have photo books showing their next learning environment. These can help parents revisit unfamiliar surroundings with their child over the holidays; they do not secure admission.
