Nursery at Springvale Primary School

Outdoor learning runs through the morning at Springvale’s nursery, where the class is called Robins. This is the school’s own provision for three-year-olds in Penistone, on Sheffield Road. Its place within a primary school gives families a school setting from the nursery stage, while the nursery timetable keeps the session to a morning.
The practical shape matters: the 2025/26 timetable sets aside three morning hours for nursery. For families choosing between different patterns of childcare, that is a useful starting point for assessing how the session fits around the rest of their day.
Outdoor learning is built into the nursery timetable rather than assigned a separate playtime slot. That makes learning outside part of the session’s structure. The morning runs from 8.40am until 11.40am in the 2025/26 schedule.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for this stage of education. In plain language, it brings together children’s learning, development, welfare and safety. Its learning areas encompass language and communication, movement, relationships and emotions, alongside early literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding the world. The emphasis is broader than preparing children to read.
Phonics nevertheless begins in Nursery. Ofsted’s June 2023 inspection confirmed that starting point, but also identified inaccurate sound pronunciation by some staff across the school, which hindered some pupils’ ability to join sounds into words. Early reading. Accurate pronunciation was an improvement priority at that date, making the modelling of sounds a relevant point for families considering the nursery’s introduction to phonics.
Parents seeking SEND advice can contact the school’s inclusion leaders through the office. The SEND and Inclusion page also brings together the SEND School Offer and Inclusion Policy, both labelled 2025. This gives families a direct contact route and specific documents around which to frame discussions about their child’s needs.
Across the school, safeguarding responsibilities sit with a designated lead and a deputy, with a governor link covering safeguarding and SEND. Families can raise safety concerns with those leaders. This provides a clear route for concerns alongside the office contact used for inclusion advice.
Attending Springvale’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Springvale directs primary applications to Barnsley School Admissions and points families to the council’s admission arrangements.
Keep the application separate from the nursery decision. The school’s admissions page gives 15 January 2026 as the deadline for September 2026 entry; that is a past admissions cycle, rather than a deadline for a future starter.
Morning collection. The 2025/26 nursery session ends at 11.40am. Families should plan their collection and subsequent childcare around that session time.
Small group school tours can be arranged through the office during the school day. To enquire or arrange a tour, email office@springvaleprimary.org or telephone 01226 760 930. A tour offers a practical opportunity to explore the school setting before choosing the nursery.
