Two three-hour sessions give Summer Lane's nursery a clear daily shape: mornings or afternoons, with a limited number of 30-hour places. This is a 40-place provision within Summer Lane Primary in Barnsley, for children from age three.
Children can start in the term following their third birthday, subject to space. For families choosing a session, the practical distinction matters: a preferred morning or afternoon place cannot be assured. The school has no Ofsted graded rating yet.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. It includes nursery literacy and maths: early learning about reading and writing, numbers and mathematical ideas. These areas have nursery-specific progression alongside HCAT Development Matters 2022, setting out learning within the broader early-years curriculum.
Morning nursery runs from 8.40am to 11.40am; afternoon nursery runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Both patterns offer a defined session, so families can plan around a consistent start and finish rather than the primary school's separate timetable.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is organised across the school through a SENDCo working with teachers, teaching assistants, families and external agencies. The school aims to identify needs early and involve parents in decisions about support.
Its graduated process moves from assessing a child's needs to planning support with parents, putting that support into practice and reviewing its effect. Parent meetings and reviews provide opportunities to discuss progress and changes. For a family whose child needs additional help, this creates a route for discussing provision with the team rather than relying on informal conversations alone.
Chartwells supplies meals across the school. Child protection is coordinated by a designated safeguarding lead and deputy leads. Families with urgent safeguarding concerns are asked to telephone directly, giving those concerns a different route from routine enquiries.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Barnsley's school admissions route and meet the application deadline. The local authority sends application information in the autumn term before children start school.
Nursery attendance does not confer priority under the school's oversubscription criteria. Those criteria cover children in care or previously in care, siblings, qualifying staff connections and distance from school. A nursery place and a Reception application therefore need to be treated as separate decisions, even when a family hopes to stay at Summer Lane.
A nursery application can be made through Barnsley Council once a child turns two. An offer requires families to return an acceptance slip. Morning or afternoon preferences can be discussed with the EYFS leader, while the limited 30-hour places require particular attention when choosing a pattern.
Prospective parents can arrange a tour with the head of school or Pupil Welfare Lead. Routine enquiries can go to slpsoffice@hcacademytrust.education or 07751043259; the school aims to respond within five working days, although timing depends on the enquiry.
The school also runs a free uniform swap shop, usually inside its main entrance. This gives families a practical way to reuse clothing through the office.
Children are admitted in the term after they turn three, depending on availability. Families can apply once their child turns two.
Morning sessions run from 8.40am to 11.40am, and afternoon sessions from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. There are also a limited number of 30-hour places.
