Conversation gives Worsbrough Common’s early years its character: vocabulary pyramids beside activities help adults develop children’s language as they learn. The school’s own nursery has 52 places, divided equally between morning and afternoon groups. Children can start in the term following their third birthday, subject to space. It sits within Worsbrough Common Primary School on Bruce Avenue in Barnsley, and is separate from the private day nursery sharing the site.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 30 April and 1 May 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language is a substantial part of learning here. In April and May 2024, adults in early years gave close attention to speaking and vocabulary, including words connected with science and history. Classroom resources helped adults build children’s knowledge through conversation. The vocabulary pyramids make that approach tangible: an activity becomes an opportunity to introduce and explore words, rather than simply complete a task.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) work includes developing language and preparing children for their next educational stage. During the same inspection, early years children were eager to demonstrate their learning, with examples of reading and writing independently. These findings concern the early years phase as a whole.
A nursery example from January 2020 shows how maths and imaginative play can connect. Children counted passengers getting onto and leaving a pretend bus, then continued the idea in their play, making tickets and sharing the driver’s role. Counting had a purpose in the game. Taking turns mattered too.
Support for communication has a clear educational purpose. In April and May 2024, the early years emphasis on spoken language helped children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), as well as those learning English as an additional language. It gives families a concrete example of how classroom teaching can support differing language needs.
The early years team includes teaching and learning support roles. Families can discuss their session needs with the nursery teacher and EYFS leader, providing a direct conversation about the morning or afternoon allocation.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority, meeting the deadline for the relevant intake. For Barnsley residents, the online route is www.barnsley.gov.uk/schooladmissions. The primary application deadline for September 2027 entry is 15 January 2027.
Separate applications. A nursery offer does not replace the Reception application. Keep the two processes distinct when planning your child’s next step, even if you want them to remain at Worsbrough Common.
Morning and afternoon sessions are the nursery’s two attendance options. Families can express a preference, but their preferred session is not guaranteed; discuss your needs with the nursery team when considering the allocation.
Applications for nursery places go through Barnsley Council, and can be made once a child turns two. Places are allocated by birth date. An offer arrives by letter, and families return the acceptance slip to the school reception.
