Daily conversation, purposeful play and early phonics give Park View’s nursery its character. The provision welcomes children aged 2 to 4 within Park View Primary School in Basingstoke. Learning to express an idea is a central part of the early years experience, with adults helping children extend their vocabulary and think through problems.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to be Strong standard in May 2026. That judgement covers the early years foundation stage within the school. Consistent routines, carefully arranged resources and close relationships with staff give young children a predictable setting in which to develop independence.
Talk is part of the learning itself. Children have daily chances to explain their thinking, tackle problems and try new words, while staff develop conversations rather than simply give instructions. For a child still learning to communicate, this means repeated opportunities to make themselves understood and build on what they can already say.
The early years curriculum combines play with deliberate teaching. Resources are organised to help children choose and remain involved in an activity. The emphasis is on doing things for themselves and staying with their learning, rather than moving quickly from one task to another.
Phonics begins in Nursery Year. Adults use questions and watch children at work to check their understanding, then offer focused help when something needs more practice. Reading receives close attention, and the May 2026 early years findings describe strong progress despite starting points that are often low.
Writing starts with movement. Children develop larger physical movements before progressing towards forming letters, with adults demonstrating routines and giving mark making a purpose. This connects the physical preparation for writing with the first attempts to put ideas on paper.
Warm relationships and familiar routines support the early years experience. Staff adjust learning for individual children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and involve outside professionals where necessary. Close working with parents helps connect support at nursery with support at home.
For children receiving SEN Support, Individual Education Plans identify goals and the help needed to reach them. Teachers review these every half term; parents receive an updated copy at the beginning of each term. Small steps make the support easier for families to understand and follow.
Support also extends to parents. The school’s Coffee and Chat sessions run on Mondays at 9am in the family room, offering a place to ask questions and meet other families. Parent and child cooking sessions provide another opportunity to spend time together through a practical activity.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Hampshire County Council’s school admissions route. For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that admissions round is now past. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
