Outdoor climbing, musical instruments and conversation give Little Treasures its early years character. This is Edith Cavell Primary School’s pre-school provision for children aged three to four, based at the school on Manton Lane in Bedford. Families have a choice between a morning session and a day ending in the afternoon, so the length of attendance can be considered alongside a child’s readiness for a longer day.
Little Treasures sits within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its curriculum brings together physical development, communication and learning to relate to other people, rather than concentrating solely on early reading and numbers.
Children’s interests help shape the Foundation Stage curriculum. In parent language, the EYFS connects learning to talk and listen with becoming more independent socially and physically. These foundations then extend into exploring the world, creative expression, literacy and mathematics. That gives play several purposes: a physical activity can also be a chance to practise language or work alongside another child.
The inspection covering July and September 2024 described early years activities indoors and outdoors, including catching, throwing, climbing and making music. These are concrete opportunities to develop movement and coordination. Adults also helped children expand their vocabulary and learn about numbers, connecting practical experiences with the language needed to explain them.
Mathematics has a named approach extending from early years through the school: Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA), alongside White Rose Schemes of Learning. The sequence moves between objects, pictures and abstract representations. For young children, its practical starting point makes number learning something they can explore with materials, rather than encounter only as written symbols.
Foundation Stage design and technology includes experimenting with construction kits, reclaimed materials, paper and card. This adds making and testing to the learning mix, with children encouraged to reconsider and improve what they create.
Supportive relationships were an early years strength in July and September 2024. Adults used their skills to develop children’s language and understanding of numbers. The connection matters: care and learning happen through interaction, with an adult helping a child put an experience into words.
For families considering additional needs, the school’s SEND approach places children alongside their peers. Its support framework covers communication, learning, emotional and social needs, and sensory or physical needs. A Special Educational Needs Coordinator provides a contact within the school, giving parents a route for discussing their child’s needs.
Attending Little Treasures does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
Bedford Borough Council handles applications for school places and acts as the school’s admissions authority. Treat choosing a nursery session and applying for Reception as separate decisions; nursery attendance should not be relied on to secure the later place.
The morning option runs from 08:45 to 11:45; the longer day runs from 08:45 to 15:30. Both begin at the same time, while their different finishing times make collection arrangements an important part of choosing between them.
