At a Glance

Songs, stories and counting games give Goldington Green Academy’s nursery its character: early learning starts with activities young children can join in with. This is the academy’s own Preschool in Bedford, catering for children aged 2 to 4+. Children can begin in the term following their second birthday, provided a place is available.

At the Ofsted inspection on 7 and 8 January 2025, the school’s early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play provides the starting point. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together children’s learning, development and care, with communication, physical skills and emotional development alongside literacy, mathematics, creative work and understanding the world. For parents, that means early education reaches beyond letters and numbers to how children express themselves and take part.

Letter sounds are introduced in Nursery through rhymes, singing and stories. Number songs and games involving counting build early mathematical understanding. In January 2025, early years teaching combined clear explanations with knowledgeable staff, while learning followed a carefully ordered sequence. These activities give children foundations for the next stage of learning rather than treating play as a break from education.

Care and Support

Children wearing pull-ups are welcome, so being fully toilet trained is not a condition of joining. Safeguarding training extends to every member of school staff.

For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school’s Inclusion Team can arrange individual interventions, support within the classroom or work in small groups. Speech and language therapists and advisory services contribute specialist advice. Parents can discuss their child’s needs with the SENDCo through the school office, giving families a direct route into planning support.

Physical access matters too. The school occupies a single level, with accessible rooms and four toilets adapted for disabled users. Adjustments are made according to individual needs, helping children with physical access requirements participate.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority’s coordinated admissions process. For 2027 entry, parents apply to the authority where they live, online or using the application form, by the deadline specified on that form.

There is a specific, limited nursery-related priority: Preschool children who are pupil premium come third in the oversubscription order, after looked-after and previously looked-after children, then siblings. Attendance alone does not confer that priority. Families should distinguish this conditional admissions position from the experience their child gains in nursery.

Practical Information

Three attendance patterns shape the booking choice. A full day runs from 8:40am to 3:10pm; morning attendance is 8:40am to 11:40am, and afternoons run from 12:10pm to 3:10pm. Bonsai sessions begin 10 minutes earlier. Funded children must attend at least four sessions each week, except in special circumstances, so the minimum booking matters alongside the hours themselves.

Funding accepted includes eligible two-year-old funding, universal 15 hours from the term following a child’s third birthday, and 30 hours funding. Places depend on both availability and funding approval. Fee-paying attendance is possible where there is space; contact the school for current charges. Payment arrangements can be discussed with the office.

Uniform includes black bottoms or the specified green skirt and dress options, a white polo and a bottle-green cardigan or sweatshirt. Total Clothing supplies it. Label footwear and clothes so they can be returned to the right child. For nursery enquiries, call the school office on 01234 326335.
