Nursery at Hazeldene School

All About Me and Frozen world give Hazeldene’s nursery learning a personal starting point and a change of scale: from children’s own lives to a themed exploration. These were the nursery topics for autumn 2025 and spring 2026 respectively. The provision belongs to Hazeldene School on Stancliffe Road in Bedford, with its own nursery manager and learning support roles.
This is early education within a primary school. For parents, the useful distinction is between becoming familiar with a school through nursery life and securing a future school place. Those are separate questions.
The nursery timetable starts with drop-off at 8.45am and ends with collection at 3.15pm. Lunch occupies the 11.30am to noon slot, giving the day a clear midpoint. Both handovers use the Nursery slope, so families have a specific collection point rather than a general school entrance.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach centres on learning planned around children’s interests and needs, with regular review of their development. In parent terms, that means starting with the child and adjusting learning as their understanding grows. Partnership with parents is part of that approach, linking what adults understand about a child at home and in education.
Language and early number understanding are concrete strengths in the early-years findings from October 2024. Children were developing accurate vocabulary and an understanding of numbers through planned activities. That gives parents useful substance behind the curriculum: learning to express ideas and make sense of number, rather than simply working through topics.
Early writing support. The same inspection identified a concern affecting younger pupils: some missed the additional practice and support needed to shape letters correctly and write fluently. This was a finding about younger pupils, rather than a nursery-only judgement. Inspectors required the school to identify these needs promptly and consistently provide additional help. Families should ask how writing needs are recognised and supported.
Caring staff relationships and settled children were features of the early years in October 2024. That matters alongside the learning: children need confidence with adults as they begin participating in activities and routines. The nursery team includes management, learning support and nursery support roles.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school’s approach includes staff training, targeted help and communication with parents about learning throughout the year. Work with Bedford’s local authority, health professionals and community organisations provides routes to support beyond the classroom.
Family support also has a physical base. The school’s Family Support Worker uses the Sunflower Room, where children can talk about feelings and concerns. Parents can contact this school-wide service through Class Dojo or the office. Free milk is available to children under five through Cool Milk, a practical part of the care offer for eligible children.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Hazeldene. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bedford Borough Council, using the normal application route and meeting its deadline. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to stand on the nursery experience itself; a future Reception place remains a separate allocation.
Nursery enquiries go through the school’s Admissions & Nursery Enquiries contact route, or the office on 01234 300100. The school address is Stancliffe Road, Bedford, MK41 9AT. A Nursery Handbook is also linked for families preparing for their child’s start, giving them a dedicated starting point for practical information.
Drop-off is at 8.45am and collection at 3.15pm, both at the Nursery slope. Lunch is scheduled for 11.30am to noon.
