At a Glance

Paint rolled beneath toy-car wheels, numbered parking spaces and leaves collected from the school field give Houghton Conquest's pre-school its character: familiar objects become practical learning tools. This is the school's own nursery provision, with a pre-school room leader and staff team. Its activities connect making, conversation and early number work rather than treating them as separate exercises.

Houghton Conquest Primary School is on High Street in Houghton Conquest. The website's announcement described a transition to primary status in September 2026, explaining the Lower School name on its pre-school material. At the inspection on 4 and 5 June 2024, Ofsted graded early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Topics provide a recognisable thread through the activities. The pre-school sequence includes Marvellous Me, Transport and Watch me Grow, alongside celebrations, people who help others and imaginative stories. For parents, the practical point is that children explore a subject through several kinds of activity, with opportunities to talk, make and practise emerging skills.

A transport project shows how this works. Children created cars from shapes, used wheels to spread paint across paper and matched toy cars to numbered parking spaces. Making lollipop signs also prompted discussion about road safety. Number recognition therefore had a concrete purpose within play, while the creative tasks offered another way to explore the same topic.

The school field is part of the nursery's learning environment. An autumn sensory walk supplied natural materials for texture trays and crafts, including leaf pumpkins and a tree creation. Children could explore materials they had gathered themselves, linking outdoor observation with practical work afterwards.

Early years learning combines planned activities with growing independence. In June 2024, children settled quickly into school routines, and adults balanced help with opportunities for children to tackle learning themselves. Pre-school children also encountered letters and sounds, giving early reading a place alongside the practical activities.

Care and Support

A pre-school room leader heads the nursery team. For additional needs, the school's SEND arrangements include identifying individual needs, creating an education plan and working with other professionals. Its provision includes children with hearing or visual impairments, mobility needs and autism. Support is described as responding to the child's needs, including where there is no diagnosis.

Parents have direct routes into the school: telephone and email contact, conversations with staff and appointments arranged through the office. This gives families ways to raise a concern or discuss their child's needs. The SEND coordinator can also be contacted directly at sendco@hcschool.org.uk.

Moving On to Reception

Separate application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal school admissions process, which is administered by Central Bedfordshire Council rather than the school. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.

The preparation described in June 2024 concerns learning: familiarity with routines, increasing independence and an introduction to letters and sounds. These experiences support the next stage of education; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

For enquiries or to arrange a visit, contact the school office on 01234 740202 or email office@hcschool.org.uk. The school invites prospective families to make contact through these routes.

Prestige Design is named as the uniform supplier for both school and pre-school. Check the school's own term calendar when planning family arrangements: its dates and training days can differ from Central Bedfordshire Council's standard calendar and from those of neighbouring schools.
