Spoken language gives Priory’s nursery its clearest character: children begin learning to express themselves confidently in complete sentences here. This is the nursery class within Priory Primary School at Greyfriars, Bedford, with 24 places for children aged three to four. Its morning provision totals 15 hours a week, making the timetable a central consideration for families arranging care around work.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 5 and 6 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning to talk is a substantial part of learning to participate. In November 2024, spoken-language teaching beginning in the Nursery Year helped children speak with confidence and use complete sentences. For a parent, this gives a concrete sense of the learning emphasis: helping children put their thoughts into words.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) curriculum supports both play and learning. In November 2024, children sustained their attention during tasks, while adults used their interactions to work out what children needed and help their learning advance. Activities had a clear purpose. Children progressed strongly from starting points that were generally below age expectations, so the emphasis was on building skills from each child’s existing level.
Dinosaurs appears as a nursery topic on the class-topic page. Parents can access topic information through the school’s Knowledge Organisers, providing a connection between classroom learning and conversations at home.
The published 2025–26 nursery staffing list includes class co-leading roles and an Early Years Apprentice. This identifies the team structure around the class, rather than a single adult working alone.
For concerns about additional needs, the school provides a SEND coordinator and inclusion lead, contactable on 01234 261768. Its SEND page also links to parent information leaflets in Bulgarian and English, Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum and SENDIASS Bedford. These give families several routes into information and discussion about support.
Safeguarding arrangements include designated lead and deputy roles. The school participates in OpEncompass, through which police share information following domestic abuse incidents so staff can support affected children at school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application to Bedford Borough Council, with applications opening in October and closing in mid-January. Places are allocated under the school’s admissions policy.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions. A child already attending the nursery still needs that application submitted through the normal council route by the deadline.
The nursery session runs from 8.40am to 11.40am. Families therefore need arrangements that work with an 11.40am finish, alongside the 15-hour weekly provision.
Entry starts in September following a child’s third birthday. Nursery applications can be made at any age, with an end-of-March closing date; decision letters are sent by the first week of May. Forms can be downloaded or collected from school, and the office can post one on request. Call 01234 261768 or email office@prioryprimary.co.uk for nursery enquiries.
Families moving into the area after September can still apply. If the class is full, the school offers the option of joining its waiting list and contacts families when a vacancy arises.
