A purpose-built home on the school site gives The Saplings its own identity within The Firs Lower School in Ampthill. The building opened in summer 2020, and the provision has 40 places. Its booking arrangements cover children aged two and a half to four. This is the school's pre-school, with a separate nursery day and its own team.
The Saplings aims to give children an enjoyable, caring start and equal opportunities to learn. Practical choices are clear: morning, afternoon or full-day attendance, Monday to Friday during term time. Families can choose a shorter session or a day spanning both sessions.
Play and children's interests shape learning. At the March 2023 inspection, early-years staff used children's interests to design purposeful activities, and children learned well through play. For parents, the significance is that play has a learning purpose, with adults helping children develop through what interests them.
In March 2023, pre-school children were introduced to books, stories and basic sounds. These give children early experience of the language and sounds involved in reading. Lift off to Language sessions also run each half term and are suitable for all children, making language development a named part of the provision.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the reference for tracking development: key people observe children regularly and assess their developmental milestones. In everyday terms, staff watch how a child is progressing and use those observations to spot possible gaps in learning. Sharing and taking turns were also part of early-years routines in March 2023, giving children practice in learning alongside others.
Outdoor learning. In March 2023, learning opportunities in the pre-school's outdoor area fell short of those elsewhere in the provision. Adults needed to plan outdoor activities more effectively. This is a material consideration for families who place particular weight on learning outside.
Settling begins with an offered home visit before the child starts. This gives parents a chance to explain their child's needs in advance. Each child has a keyworker as an initial contact, while the wider Saplings team, including the special educational needs coordinator, contributes to their learning and support.
A two-year progress check is discussed with parents, including any concerns. Regular team meetings and morning briefings bring children's development and individual needs into staff discussions. The pre-school's SENCo works with families and external agencies; named partners include the Speech and Language Therapist, Community Nursery Nurse and Early Years Send Team. That creates a route from an initial concern to specialist involvement.
For children using Kids' Club, the staff also work in Saplings or The Firs during the school day, providing familiar adults across the extended day. Breakfast can be booked for an extra charge and includes fruit with toast or cereal. A light tea is an extra-charge option for children booked for collection at 6pm. Water is freely available during club sessions.
Attending The Saplings does not guarantee a Reception place at The Firs. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. The application route is through Central Bedfordshire, using its online application or a postal form. Treat the nursery booking and the school application as separate decisions.
Morning attendance runs from 9:10am to 12:10pm; afternoons run from 12:10pm to 3:10pm. A full day lasts from 9:10am to 3:10pm. Attendance must span at least two separate days. Children aged two years six months can take up to four sessions, or 12 hours, each week; three- and four-year-olds can take up to six sessions, or 18 hours.
Eligible children can use Nursery Education Funding. The basic entitlement is up to 15 hours weekly over 38 weeks, totalling a maximum of 570 hours, starting the term following the qualifying second or third birthday. Some families with three- or four-year-olds may qualify for an additional 15 hours, bringing the total to 30 hours. This requires an HMRC application the preceding term and an 11-digit funding code. Confirm with the nursery how this fits its attendance caps. Charges apply to children who are not eligible for funding and to attendance beyond funded hours. Refer to the school for current charges. Kids' Club accepts regular bookings and occasional bookings subject to space, during term time; requests require confirmation from its team.
