Play, a Key Worker and a learning record shared with home give Wootton Preschool its shape. This is Wootton Primary School’s nursery provision at Harris Way, Wootton, MK43 9FZ. Morning, afternoon and all-day sessions offer different ways to fit preschool into family life.
Learning centres on play within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework used to plan and assess children’s early development. At Wootton, that means encouraging children to tackle problems, explore materials and begin developing reading and writing skills. Sharing play with other children sits alongside learning to accept unfamiliar adults and situations. Social confidence and early learning are treated together.
There is room for individual expression, too. Children are encouraged to communicate in different ways and recognise differences between people. These are practical aims for the preschool day: learning to join in, try something unfamiliar and play alongside someone else.
Observation connects those experiences to the next steps in learning. Staff use 2Simple alongside manual observation forms to assess progress against the EYFS. Experiences at home also contribute, giving parents a part in the picture of what their child can do.
A child’s Key Worker brings their observations together, and these go home each half term for parents to read and comment on. Parents can also arrange to see the information with staff. That creates a regular opportunity to contribute, rather than leaving discussion of progress until the move to school.
Before children join preschool, members of the teaching team make a home visit. This gives families time to raise questions and discuss support that needs arranging before the child starts.
Lunch Club serves children attending with 30-hour funding. They bring their own packed lunch, and the school is nut-free. Families therefore supply the food as well as planning for the separately charged lunch session.
At Harris Way, disabled toilets are provided in each block, and both school sites have disabled parking bays. These are useful physical arrangements for families with access needs. The school’s SEND team includes a SENCO and an assistant; parents can contact the SENCO at senco@woottonprimary.co.uk.
Preschool attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admission priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, using its normal admissions process and deadline. Bedford families apply through Bedford Borough Council.
For September 2027 entry, children with an Education, Health and Care plan naming the school are admitted ahead of the oversubscription criteria. Those criteria then prioritise looked-after and previously looked-after children, children of staff, siblings and proximity to school. Preschool attendance is not a criterion.
Transition support is a separate matter. Children starting Reception are offered a summer-term morning visit to meet teachers and explore the setting. Preschool observations pass to the Reception class, helping staff build on earlier learning. For children with special educational needs starting Reception, additional meetings or visits with the SENDCO can be arranged. Staff also share the approaches that have helped them.
The morning session runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.20pm to 3.20pm. All-day attendance spans 8.30am to 3.20pm, with a charged lunch club and a packed lunch from home. Contact the school for current lunch-club charges.
Children qualify for 15 funded hours from the term following their third birthday. Applications for a 30-hour code go through Childcare Choices, and funding can be split between providers. Funding condition. Wootton requires 30-hour funding to accommodate the corresponding sessions. That condition matters when planning a longer preschool week.
There is a September-only intake. To enquire about a place, return a starter form to the Harris Way main office or telephone 01234 768239. Allocation follows eligibility to start rather than the date a form was submitted, and submitting the form does not secure a preschool place.
