Finding objects becomes a lesson in language at Belford: children in the two-year-old provision learn words about position through a practical search. That small example captures the nursery's emphasis on communication. This is Belford Primary School's own nursery provision, on West Street in Belford, with children starting from age two.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language has a clear purpose here. In January 2023, the youngest children were learning positional vocabulary by looking for objects connected with their learning. Words become something to use in an activity, giving parents a concrete picture of how early communication develops.
The early years foundation stage combines preparation for reading with an understanding of number. In January 2023, children were getting started quickly with early reading, while number work happened throughout the day. The emphasis was on building foundations through repeated opportunities, rather than reserving number for a single lesson. Early years learning also prepared children effectively for their next stage.
Movement has a defined place in the curriculum: nursery children receive a minimum of two hours of curriculum PE each week. The wider school grounds include an allotment and a Forest School area, adding a physical setting for learning beyond classrooms. These are useful features to distinguish from the nursery's session timetable: a full day runs from 8.50am to 2.50pm.
Independence grows through routines. In January 2023, established early years routines helped children do more for themselves, and children made a positive start to school life. For a young child, predictable patterns can make participation easier as well as support learning.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities follows a graduated approach across the school, beginning with extra help from the class teacher. Where necessary, a speech therapist, educational psychologist or specialist teachers for hearing or visual impairment can become involved. Parents are kept informed throughout. This gives families a sequence of support, with specialist involvement when needed, rather than a single fixed response to different needs.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Northumberland Local Education Authority manages school admissions; admissions guidance is available by emailing schooladmissions@northumberland.gov.uk. Learning that prepares a child for the next stage should be considered separately from the allocation of a school place.
Full-day nursery hours are 8.50am to 2.50pm. The lunch break is from noon to 1pm, providing a clear division within the day. For nursery enquiries, telephone the school on 01668 213372. The school address is West Street, Belford, Northumberland, NE70 7QD.
