At a Glance

Imaginative drawing, stories and outdoor choices give this nursery its shape. Children join from age 3, within a mixed Nursery and Reception class at St Cuthberts Catholic Primary School in Tweedmouth. This is the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision: younger children share their class with children already in their first school year.

Catholic practice is part of daily life. Prayer and worship punctuate the day, while religious education uses Come and See. Families choosing the nursery are choosing that faith setting alongside its early learning activities.

The Nursery Day

The early years day alternates between organised learning and children's own choices. There are separate times for stories, phonics and calculation, with opportunities to choose activities outdoors as well as indoors. That gives the day both a framework and room for children to follow their interests.

Drawing makes early writing an imaginative activity. A story, traditional tale or animation supplies the starting point; children draw their own characters or ideas, discuss what they have created and add letters, numbers or words. Vocabulary is a focus. For parents, the useful distinction is that drawing and conversation are part of learning to write, rather than an activity separate from it. All Aboard Phonics is used for phonics teaching in EYFS, with children grouped by ability.

Books also connect home and class. Surprise Storyteller events invite families to read aloud, and each class has a Book time Buddy that spends weekends at home. During Advent, the early years space includes a crib role play area and a small world Nativity set, bringing the religious calendar into children's play.

In May 2025, Ofsted found that early years children developed their speech and listening successfully and learned to cooperate in play and work. There was also a curriculum concern: connections between essential knowledge and themes needed to be clearer across subjects. The curriculum begins in Nursery, so this matters to how children's learning builds over time.

Care and Support

The EYFS teacher also holds SEND coordination and designated safeguarding responsibilities and has a paediatric first aid qualification. Families can telephone or email to discuss additional needs with the SEND coordinator. Support may be temporary or longer term, with parents kept informed and outside professionals involved where appropriate. It can also address a child's transition into school or significant changes at home.

In May 2025, children in early years had close relationships with adults and were familiar with daily routines. Children needing help with speaking received staff support, with prompt specialist referrals when necessary. That is useful reassurance for families concerned about communication development.

Snacks are accessible during the day, and early years lunch falls between 11:30am and 12:30pm. School catering provides fruit and salad daily and accommodates requested special diets. Families can combine packed lunches and school meals within one week.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. Reception applications are coordinated by the local authority; the school directs families to Northumberland County Council's online application route.

For September 2026 entry, the application window ran from 1 November 2025 to 15 January 2026. Those dates are past. The national normal-round deadline for primary applications is 15 January. Sharing an EYFS class gives children experience alongside Reception children, but that classroom arrangement does not replace the separate application.

Practical Information

The school day runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm, with doors opening at 8:40am. Nursery children use the EY entrance and are collected at the EY exit. Nursery applications go directly to the school, using a form obtained from the office or downloaded; places are allocated in application order.

Uniform is optional for Nursery. Comfortable clothes that children can manage for toileting, spare underwear and socks, and shoes without laces are the practical requirements. These choices support growing independence. General enquiries can be made on 01289 307785 or at admin@stcuthbertsberwick.org.uk, and families can contact the school to arrange a visit.
