Nursery at Glyne Gap School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Communication, choice and everyday independence give Glyne Gap’s nursery its character. Children can join from age two, within a specialist school serving pupils with severe or profound learning difficulties, complex needs and autism. The school aims to help children express themselves and develop practical skills and friendships. Those priorities give families a clear starting point for discussing their child’s learning.

At the December 2024 inspection, Glyne Gap’s nursery shared a location with Bexhill College’s Early Years Nursery. It remains Glyne Gap School’s provision: the neighbouring nursery’s identity should not be confused with the specialist place a family is considering.

The Nursery Day

Individual learning goals shape the school’s approach. A child’s next step might be sitting, walking or indicating which toy they want. Teachers plan a personalised programme around priority learning, supported by teaching assistants, and share those plans with parents. Progress is measured against the child’s own next steps.

Total Communication is the school’s guiding approach to communication. Its Communication Team brings together specialist teachers, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and support staff. Depending on individual needs, school approaches include PECS, which uses pictures for communication, structured teaching and intensive interaction. For parents, the practical focus is how their child can understand others and make their own wishes understood.

Story sharing is one concrete nursery activity. In December 2024, nursery children were calm and comfortable sharing books with an adult. That gives a small but useful picture of children participating in an adult-supported learning experience.

Across the school, specialist resources are allocated according to individual learning needs. Personal care rooms are provided in every department, while shared resources include a sensory room and hydrotherapy pool. These are school facilities; they should not be read as a nursery session timetable.

Care and Support

Joining is planned with the family. The school arranges home visits for new pupils, gathers information from parents and organises an introduction to the child’s class. This makes the child’s existing routines and needs part of the preparation.

A home/school book carries news and achievements between families and staff each day. Parents also contribute to termly learning goals, giving them a role in deciding what their child works towards.

Personal care support follows an individual arrangement, with a familiar adult leading the routine and preserving the child’s dignity. Independence remains an aim, even when a child needs substantial help. For eating, drinking or swallowing difficulties, the school and parents can make a referral to CITES for additional support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat the next placement as a separate admissions decision and contact the local authority about the route for your child. Formal referrals to Glyne Gap usually go through East Sussex Children’s Authority with a completed Education, Health and Care Plan.

Preparation for a new class is a separate matter. The school uses Moving On books and planned introductions to help children prepare for changes; this support should not be mistaken for an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Uniform is optional across Glyne Gap School. Families choosing it can use jade green sweatshirts or jade cardigans, with collared T-shirts in jade or white. This leaves parents a choice about school clothing.
