Nursery at Little Common School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Worms, crickets and an outdoor classroom give Little Common’s nursery a hands-on character. Children aged 2 to 4 have an indoor learning area and an outdoor classroom, bringing space for exploration into the provision itself. This is the school’s own nursery in Shepherds Close, Bexhill-on-Sea.

A qualified teacher leads the nursery, supported by qualified practitioners. The nursery aims to develop children’s independence, confidence and curiosity, with activities shaped around their interests and abilities. For parents, the defining combination is teacher-led provision and learning that responds to the individual child.

The Nursery Day

Practical encounters with living things provide a concrete example of learning here. In April 2026, nursery children handled crickets, hoppers and worms while exploring how to treat small creatures gently. The activity connected discovery with care: children could investigate something real while practising considerate behaviour.

Indoors and outdoors both have a place in the learning environment. Alongside the indoor space, the outdoor classroom gives children another setting for activities. The nursery tailors these to individual abilities and interests, so its approach starts with the child rather than describing one identical experience for everyone.

Participation also extends beyond the nursery group. In May 2026, nursery children joined older pupils for play and a picnic, with fish and chips on the school field. That was a shared celebration, rather than a daily meal arrangement, and an example of the youngest children taking part in school life.

Care and Support

Teaching and care sit within the same team structure: a qualified teacher leads, with qualified practitioners supporting the children. The nursery says it recognises each child’s individual needs and aims to help children become more independent. This makes the individual child the focus of its stated approach.

For families discussing additional needs, the school’s SEN coordinator can be contacted through the office on 01424 842297. Parents can also use Arbor to message the school; school communications, including letters, are sent through it. Registering gives families a route for receiving messages and keeping contact details up to date.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. For September 2027 entry, however, it gives conditional priority under the fifth oversubscription criterion: children must be currently enrolled and have joined by the first week of the term starting in January 2027, with a completed Supplementary Form accompanying the application.

A separate Reception application is still required through the family’s home local authority, which is East Sussex for local residents. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 23:59 on 15 January 2027. Treat the nursery application and Reception application as two separate tasks; meeting the nursery priority condition does not replace the latter.

Practical Information

Applications to the nursery can be made using its application form. Daytime nursery viewings are not offered, to protect the children’s routines. Families should factor that arrangement into their choice.

For enquiries, contact info@littlecommon.org or 01424 842297. The school office opens from 8.30am to 4.30pm on school days. Ask the school for current charges.
