Choosing a story can be a small child's first experience of having a say. At Crook Log, nursery children vote for a story or theme by pointing with their fingers or feet. It is a concrete introduction to making choices together, rather than an abstract lesson about democracy.
This is Crook Log Primary School's own nursery in Bexleyheath. Children join in September after turning three, and the nursery team includes a teacher and teaching assistants. Morning and afternoon sessions give the provision its daily shape.
Language gives early learning a clear focus. At the April 2024 inspection, Ofsted highlighted how early-years children were encouraged to describe shapes using vocabulary about corners, curves and sides. Practical exploration becomes an opportunity to put ideas into words.
The EYFS art curriculum brings together painting, drawing and experimenting with materials. Children explore texture and colour, explain how they made their creations, and use props to act out stories. These activities connect making things with talking about them: the finished picture is only part of the learning.
Nursery life also includes discussions about respecting other people, while early-years children celebrate festivals associated with different cultures and religions. The school's classroom wellbeing approach includes outdoor learning, art and mindfulness. Together, these give families a picture of learning that includes expression, conversation and relationships alongside practical activities.
Starting nursery happens in stages. Children begin gradually so that staff can give them individual attention while they become familiar with the setting. This makes settling part of the entry process rather than expecting every child to manage the same first day.
Across the school, classrooms have areas for calming down and boards where children can indicate their feelings. Parents with concerns about their child's wellbeing can speak with the class teacher or wellbeing team. These provide a route from noticing a worry to discussing support.
The school-wide SEND approach involves the SENCO coordinating additional help with staff, with parents involved in planning support and the school reviewing interventions. Adaptations include visual timetables and extra processing time. Appointments with the Inclusion Manager are arranged through the office, giving families a direct contact for discussing individual needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Bexley Council's online system. For the September 2027 entry cycle, applications run from 1 September 2026 until 15 January 2027.
The school's admissions criteria do not give priority for nursery attendance. They identify staff children, looked-after children, children with a statement of special educational need or EHC plan, and siblings; distance determines the remaining places. Familiarity with the nursery therefore needs to be kept separate from securing a school place.
Transition support includes two summer classroom visits for new Reception children, with parents welcome at the first, followed by a gradual start normally lasting around seven days. These arrangements help children adjust to the next stage.
Morning arrival runs between 8.45am and 9am, with collection between 11.30am and 11.45am. Afternoon collection falls between 3.10pm and 3.30pm. The collection windows matter when planning work or another child's pickup.
Nursery applications go through Bexley Council online. For enquiries, contact the school office on 0208 303 9203 or admin@crooklog.bexley.sch.uk. Prospective families can also book a school visit by telephone.
