Cookery, forest school and a day stretching from 7:30am to 6:30pm give Little Sunbeams a distinct practical identity. This is Fairford Academy Barnehurst's provision for children aged 2–3, alongside its nursery for children aged 3–4. The two age groups have different session arrangements, so the distinction matters when planning childcare.
For the older children, there are 26 morning places and an afternoon option. Little Sunbeams offers limited places over 51 weeks each year. Its 51-week availability is a practical consideration for families planning childcare across the year.
Little Sunbeams centres its approach on play. Children explore outside, make friends and take part in creative activities; the nursery aims to develop independence, curiosity and confidence through these experiences. Friendship and exploration sit alongside planned learning rather than being treated as separate extras.
The enrichment programme includes forest school, cookery and physical education activities during the day. These give parents concrete examples of the provision's breadth: children have opportunities for outdoor exploration, practical activity and movement. They are more useful indicators of the day than a general promise of stimulation.
Across the school's early years foundation stage (EYFS), planning addresses both knowledge and skills, with a progression map and topic vocabulary. The emphasis is on building learning in steps. In February and March 2023, early-years children enjoyed varied learning activities, cooperated with one another and managed familiar routines. Those findings concern the early years collectively, rather than a separate judgement on Little Sunbeams.
Relationships are central to Little Sunbeams' stated approach. The nursery says its team takes time to develop trust with children and their families, aiming to help children feel secure enough to explore and become more independent. That emphasis connects care with participation in the nursery day.
Families also have a school-level route for raising concerns: speak to the child's teacher or ask the office for a return call. For SEND concerns or learning difficulties, parents can arrange a conversation with the SENCo. A further discussion with the leadership team can be requested through the office or by email, giving families a clear sequence for seeking support.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the normal deadline. Choosing nursery provision and obtaining a school place are separate decisions; a familiar school setting should not be treated as an offer of admission.
Little Sunbeams has full days from 7:30am to 6:30pm, morning half days from 7:30am to 12:30pm and afternoon half days from 1:30pm to 6:30pm. A minimum of two full days is required. It operates throughout the year, closing for one week at Christmas, bank holidays and Easter weekend.
Nursery entry points are September, January and April. Enquiries go to the school office on 01322 333 998 or fairfordadmin@illuminateminds.org; Little Sunbeams also has an interest-registration form. Applications for the nursery for children aged 3–4 use Bexley's starting-nursery route.
