Busy Bees runs on a morning rhythm: play, practical learning and an early finish. Gravel Hill Primary School’s nursery welcomes children aged 3 and 4, with 26 part-time morning places providing 15 hours a week. It forms part of the school’s Foundation Stage in Bexleyheath. For families, the decisive practical point is the short day: this provision needs to fit alongside afternoon care arrangements.
Children learn indoors and outdoors, combining activities they choose themselves with experiences guided by adults. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, movement and social development with early reading, mathematics, creative expression and learning about the world. In parent terms, learning extends beyond letters and numbers to how children communicate, play together and become more independent. The school aims to shape experiences around each child’s interests and needs, reviewing their development regularly.
Stories, poems and action rhymes give the morning concrete language activities. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the school’s phonics programme; in Nursery, the emphasis includes listening, attention and oral blending, or joining spoken sounds together. Children therefore practise skills that prepare them for later reading through spoken language and shared texts.
At the January 2022 inspection, nursery mathematics involved tangible teaching aids and repeated practice to introduce number. Early-years communication was also a focus, although the school-wide improvement action called for more opportunities to practise and retain subject vocabulary. That concern should be understood at its stated school-wide scope, rather than treated as a nursery-only finding.
Partnership with parents is an explicit early-years aim. The school also plans learning workshops, Learning Showcases and Family Golden Time across the year, giving families ways to engage with children’s learning beyond the session itself.
An assistant headteacher holds responsibility for inclusion as SENDCo. At school level, Monty’s Room and Meerkats Room are Enhanced SEN Provisions for children who need a smaller, quieter learning setting and an individually planned curriculum. These are school provisions; nursery access should not be assumed.
Care procedures give parents a concrete communication route after an accident. Following a head bump, staff provide first aid, contact parents by text or telephone and attach a red wrist-band recording when it happened. Parents also receive advice about worsening symptoms. Significant injuries prompt an immediate telephone call. Safeguarding concerns can be emailed to dsl@gravelhillprimaryschool.co.uk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bexley admissions by the deadline for their child’s entry year. For the September 2026 intake, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past; families planning a later start need the deadline for that later intake.
The nursery session runs from 08:35 to 11:35. Morning provision is the booking pattern, with 15 hours a week only, so families should plan around the midday finish.
Nursery applications go directly to Bexley Council school admissions. For general enquiries, contact the school office on 01322 521343 or admin@gravelhillprimaryschool.co.uk. School open-day places can be booked by email. The school car park is reserved for staff, so driving families need to allow for parking elsewhere and walking to the entrance.
