Rhymes and sounds mark the start of nursery learning at Stowlawn. This is the school's own Nursery class on Green Park Avenue in Bilston, with early education taking place within its early years team. An Early Years Leader and nursery teaching assistants form part of that structure, linking the provision to the school's wider organisation for young children.
The physical setting includes an Early Years Open Learning Space and an Early Years Play Area. Those named spaces give the nursery a distinct early years setting within the primary school.
Early learning begins with listening. Ofsted's March 2023 inspection recorded that children encounter rhymes and sounds from the start of Nursery. For parents, that gives a concrete picture of the first steps towards reading: attention to spoken sounds begins early, rather than reading being treated solely as a later classroom task.
In March 2023, children in early years were building knowledge and skills that supported subsequent learning across subjects. The emphasis is on foundations. Alongside the early years learning and play spaces, the sound work gives families specific features to weigh when considering their child's first experience of school.
Early reading. The same inspection identified a school reading issue: some books were insufficiently matched to the sounds pupils had learned, delaying progress. This was a school finding, rather than a separate nursery judgement, but it matters when considering how those first nursery sound activities connect with later reading.
Support for additional needs has an organisational structure across Stowlawn. Teachers and senior leaders make up the Inclusion team, which oversees provision, follows children's progress and makes referrals to external agencies. This gives families a route for discussing learning needs beyond the nursery classroom team.
The school's SEND approach includes assessing interventions, reviewing their effect and changing support where necessary. Advice from external professionals is incorporated into curriculum activities. Its four areas of support cover sensory and physical needs, learning and cognition, communication and interaction, and social, emotional and mental health needs.
Parents are included in discussions about their child's needs and proposed support. Teachers, support staff and the Inclusion team provide both formal and informal communication, so conversations about a child's development can involve the people organising that support. Families can raise concerns with the SENCO or inclusion leadership through the school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions; attending Nursery should never be taken as confirmation of a school place.
