At a Glance

Clay, music and questions about the world give Bordesley Green East its character. An artist in residence works on projects with children, while the Early Years Baccalaureate connects their learning with identity, expression and the planet. Play has a clear purpose here.

This Birmingham local authority maintained nursery school serves Stechford and North Yardley. It provides for 90 children, with places for two-, three- and four-year-olds. Separate areas cater for different age groups, each led by qualified key workers. The nursery school itself is the setting, rather than a nursery class within a primary school.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning, development and care together. Adults observe children's interests and use those observations to plan a mixture of activities they lead and play children initiate. Alongside this, the Early Years Baccalaureate explores questions about how people express themselves and how the world works. That gives children's interests a place in the planning.

Creative work extends beyond drawing. Children explore ideas with the resident artist, and learning is documented in floor books and displays so it can be revisited. The 2025–2026 SEND information booklet describes weekly music and Forest School sessions, a mud kitchen and a garden where children grow food. These give children different ways to participate: through sound, materials and practical activity.

The November 2024 inspection identified two weaknesses: adults sometimes completed tasks children could manage themselves, and outdoor learning needed further resources and staff development. Indoor learning was stronger. Independence and outdoor learning. These were specific development priorities; families should weigh the creative programme alongside the need for children to practise doing things for themselves and receive equally purposeful learning outside.

Care and Support

Every child has a keyworker, with opportunities for parents to speak to them daily. Termly consultations focus on learning and development, while Tapestry lets families contribute experiences from home. This gives parents both regular conversations and a way to share what their child does beyond nursery.

For children with SEND, the 2025–2026 information booklet describes home visits, discussions with previous settings and reading relevant reports when children start. Visual timetables and boards showing what happens now and next help explain changes during the day. Support also includes Makaton, smaller learning groups and Wellcomm language screening. The curriculum provides a nurture group for children needing help with emotional wellbeing, and language preparation and small groups for children learning English as an additional language.

Food arrangements depend on the session. Snacks are included in the full-week top-up arrangement, but parents supply lunch; the midday club also requires a packed lunch. Staff administer only prescribed medicines, with written parental permission. Tell staff beforehand if a different person will collect your child.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing this nursery and applying for primary school as separate decisions.

Transition support addresses the child's experience of moving school. For children with SEND, the 2025–2026 booklet describes inviting the receiving school's SENCO and key staff into nursery, sharing information about learning needs and using a photo book to prepare the child for change. Familiarity and information sharing support the move; they do not secure admission.
