Family partnership gives this nursery its clearest character: staff get to know children’s interests and needs before they start, and keep working with parents as learning develops. The nursery belongs to St Edward's Catholic Primary School, a Catholic school on Packington Lane in Coleshill. Its provision caters for two- and three-year-olds.
At the Ofsted inspection on 5 and 6 March 2024, early years provision was judged Good within the school’s inspection. That judgement covers the early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. For families, the useful detail is the attention to individual children: the early years curriculum was organised around their needs, with family involvement helping staff understand each child.
Individual needs shape the early years curriculum. In March 2024, learning was planned to suit the children, and information from families about their interests helped staff understand them before they joined. This gives the curriculum a personal starting point: what a child needs and enjoys matters to the planning.
Parents also have a role beyond the nursery session. Workshops help families support learning at home, extending the partnership beyond initial conversations. The practical benefit is a connection between the learning children encounter at school and the support parents can give them afterwards.
Getting to know a child starts before their first session. Early years staff work with families before children join, making those conversations part of preparation for starting school. The relationship continues afterwards, rather than ending once a child has begun attending.
Across the primary and nursery school, support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) involves the class teacher, the special educational needs coordinator and teaching assistants. Teachers adapt learning, including using practical activities, and share Individual Learning Plans with parents for review at least once a term. That gives families a regular opportunity to discuss both support and progress.
The coordinator can involve professionals such as a speech and language therapist or educational psychologist. Parents are asked for permission before a specialist referral, and professional advice is discussed with them. A home/school contact book may also be used where agreed useful. These are school-wide support arrangements that include the nursery, with communication tailored to the child’s circumstances.
Separate application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions; a nursery place is not confirmation of a later school place.
