At a Glance

Rhymes, stories and conversation give Brookhouse’s nursery and pre-school its character. Children aged 2 to 4 attend provision within Brookhouse Primary School in Blackburn, with language development a central focus from the start. For a young child, that means learning through words as well as experiences: listening, joining in and talking about what they do.

The Nursery Day

Stories provide a starting point for learning. Brookhouse builds its early years curriculum around texts and uses rhymes alongside them to develop language. Spoken English is modelled, and vocabulary is taught deliberately. This gives children examples of language to use as their own understanding grows.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of development. Communication, physical development and social and emotional learning sit alongside literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent terms, learning to express a need or manage a relationship belongs alongside early reading and number work. Progress is tracked so that planning can respond to individual children rather than expecting everyone to develop at the same pace.

Activities include making and tasting porridge, artwork and maths, with exploration both indoors and outside. These are concrete experiences for children to discuss, linking practical activity with the nursery’s emphasis on language. In October 2022, staff supported early years children’s communication by discussing their learning with them; this included the provision for two-year-olds. Preparation for the next stage was effective across the early years.

Care and Support

Starting relationships are treated individually. Transition arrangements are adapted to each child, and staff work with families to respond to their needs. This makes the family’s knowledge of their child part of the approach, rather than expecting one starting pattern to suit everyone.

In October 2022, clear routines helped early years children develop a feeling of belonging and security. Predictable expectations gave them a framework for learning and behaviour.

Support has named responsibilities within the wider team: a SEND coordinator and a deputy safeguarding lead whose remit includes Early Years. Families can contact the SEND coordinator through the school office. That gives parents a direct route to discuss additional needs.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Brookhouse’s nursery or pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Blackburn with Darwen’s online school admissions route, following the normal admissions procedure and deadline. The local authority communicates the allocation decision.

Keep that application separate from the child’s developmental preparation. Tailored transitions and learning that builds communication skills support the next step in education; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoon sessions run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Those distinct start and finish times matter when arranging collection or fitting attendance around work.

For children aged 2 to 4, Brookhouse offers 15 hours of early years provision each week. Eligible pre-school children can receive 30 hours. Nursery applications can be made through Blackburn with Darwen’s early education route, or by returning a form collected from the Early Years office. Places are allocated in application order; families can request a waiting-list place if provision is full.
