Stories, outdoor play and daily worship give Little Lennies its character. This is the preschool for three and four-year-olds at Langho and Billington St Leonards Church of England Primary School, with teacher-led provision during term time. It belongs to the school's early years phase, giving nursery children a place within the wider school community.
The early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 19 and 20 November 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years phase rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play follows children's interests, with adults adding planned learning activities. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) takes practical shape through counting, conversation, stories and shared play. Children use both indoor and outdoor classrooms each day, so learning extends beyond a table or carpet. Songs, circle time and reading sit alongside snack breaks; worship includes prayers, hymns and stories.
Little Wandle's Foundations for Phonics provides the nursery's starting point for sound work. Children practise oral blending, joining spoken sounds together before moving towards reading. Each week they select a book from the classroom library box to share at home, with their choices recorded in a Reading Record. This gives families a concrete way to join in with the nursery's language and literacy focus.
Tuesday is Forest School day, while PE takes place on Mondays and Fridays. Wellies and waterproof clothing stay in the Outside Classroom, ready for outdoor use. Religious education and computing, including online safety, also feature weekly. The pattern combines daily play with recurring activities that families can recognise across the week.
Curriculum clarity. In November 2024, some intended learning in the Nursery Year lacked sufficient definition, slowing children's acquisition of knowledge in those areas. Clearer learning goals were required so teaching could support progress more consistently. This is a material qualification to the early years Good judgement.
Settling begins with a parent tour, meeting the team and discussing the child's individual needs. A start date and sessions are then arranged according to place availability. Key workers keep in close touch with families while children settle, giving parents a continuing point of contact after the initial visit.
Emotion Coaching is the named approach used to support children's development. The nursery describes a curriculum that responds to individual interests and needs, with attention to social development and understanding emotions. Stay and Play sessions held in autumn 2025 gave parents time to play alongside their children and understand their learning.
Early years children receive fruit daily. Milk is free for children under five through Cool Milk, with parental registration required. The school is nut free, and classroom drinks bottles may contain only plain, still water. These arrangements matter when packing snacks and drinks.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions route by the applicable deadline. The school's guidance directs parents to apply online in the autumn before their child starts school.
Transition support is a separate matter. The school contacts children's preschool settings and speaks with their key workers to understand their needs before September. Families can also request individual discussions as part of a tailored induction. Those conversations support the move; they do not secure admission.
Nursery enquiries and tours go through the school office on 01254 247156 or info@langho-st-leonards.lancs.sch.uk. Office staff help with the forms for nursery places, and a waiting list operates when demand exceeds availability.
Preschool children wear the same uniform as the rest of the school. Clothing and belongings should be labelled. Children attend in PE kit on Mondays and Fridays, with suitable outdoor clothing for Forest Tuesdays. A second-hand uniform rail in the school's front entrance gives families another option for obtaining clothing.
