An early years unit with its own outdoor space gives St Mary's pre-school a practical focus: learning can move between the classroom and outside. The nursery belongs to St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School, Langho, and has a preschool leader within the school team. Its Catholic setting also shapes everyday life, including saying Grace before lunch.
In January 2026, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school. Children joining in the Nursery Year made a positive start and developed the foundations needed for their next stage.
Books, movement and learning to cooperate are recurring parts of the early years experience. Adults introduce unfamiliar vocabulary during play and activities as well as through reading. Stories and nursery rhymes give children further opportunities to enjoy language. Physical activities develop coordination and balance, while shared problems encourage children to work together. Learning includes joining in with tidying up. These are practical foundations for participating in a group.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together. Here, that means attention to communication, physical skills and increasing independence alongside early literacy. Birth to Five Matters is part of the pre-school's curriculum guidance. Red Rose Phonics is used from pre-school onwards, giving early work with sounds a named teaching programme.
The purpose-built modular early years unit has an outdoor area supporting learning inside and out. Grassy space and a garden provide opportunities for activities of a Forest Schools type. The school is also developing its Forest School outdoor area, with staff training and resources being developed alongside it.
Family participation extends into learning. Weekly EYFS family fun sessions share poems and rhymes, and children in EYFS choose a library book to take home each week. That gives families something concrete to enjoy together beyond the session.
Settling begins before children start. In January 2026, parents were involved ahead of entry to early years, helping children become comfortable with school life. Staff continued to update families about progress. Everyday care also develops independence: children practise putting on their own coats and washing their hands before eating.
School lunches are prepared on site using the Lancashire Schools menu, with adjustments for intolerances or allergies arranged through the office. Families select meals together through ParentPay. EYFS children receive a free fruit snack at breaktimes, and children need a water bottle during the day.
For additional needs, the school's SENCO works with families as concerns arise. Support can include visual timetables and referrals, with parental consent, for services such as speech and language. This gives families a route from discussing a concern to seeking specialist help.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Lancashire County Council's online process, which opens in September and closes in January each year. A baptism form copy and the Supplementary Information Form should also go to the school office alongside the online application. Keep that application separate from choosing the nursery.
Visits can be arranged through the school office. For enquiries, telephone 01254 247157 or email bursar@st-marys-langho.lancs.sch.uk. The school is on Whalley Road in Langho.
Physical access includes a designated blue badge parking bay, a ramp to the main entrance and ramped routes to playgrounds. These are useful practical features for families needing wheelchair access when visiting or attending appointments.
