At a Glance

Storytelling, imaginary worlds and growing independence give West Boldon’s early years provision its character. The school’s own nursery caters for children aged three and forms part of its early years provision on Hindmarch Drive. Its nursery teacher also holds the Early Years Lead role, linking classroom teaching with responsibility for this stage of learning.

Ofsted’s January 2026 inspection judged early years to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Explorers is the name given to the EYFS group within Dimensions: Learning Means the World. EYFS means Early Years Foundation Stage. Here, its practical emphasis includes developing language, early number skills and the small movements needed for writing, alongside learning through play. The Explorers approach encourages children to experiment, become curious and build confidence in working with others.

Continuous provision shapes much of the early years day: children use activities and resources to explore learning rather than simply follow the older pupils’ lesson timetable. Indoors and outside, they have opportunities to return to activities and practise independently. In January 2026, children played cooperatively and developed make-believe worlds together. That gives independent exploration a social purpose too.

Language runs through the learning. Adults introduce expressive vocabulary and use clear explanations, while stories and creative activities give children reasons to talk. Mathematics, learning about the world, early reading and hand control follow a planned sequence. Where children need extra practice, adults adjust activities, including focused work on counting or combining letter sounds. Play and targeted teaching work alongside each other.

Care and Support

Settling starts with attentive interaction. In January 2026, early years staff helped children feel comfortable and drew them into activities; new starters picked up routines promptly and showed happiness in the setting. Adults knew children individually and adjusted learning to their needs. For a child beginning nursery, that connects reassurance with practical help to join in.

Self-care has a concrete daily routine: nursery children brush their teeth after lunch. Introduced in the 2025/26 academic year, this gives children regular practice in looking after themselves.

The school’s wider SEND arrangements include support from speech and language therapists and educational psychologists. Families can discuss their child’s needs with the SENCO, and the school describes joint target-setting and progress discussions with parents. Class Dojo provides a direct route to the class teacher for concerns. These are useful points of contact when a family needs to explain a difficulty or coordinate support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step in planning your child’s next year, rather than assuming nursery enrolment completes it.

Practical Information

The nursery is at West Boldon Primary School on Hindmarch Drive, NE36 0HX. For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0191 536 2846 or use its contact form. The office handles information requests and general queries.
