Storybooks to share at home and supervised toothbrushing give Beacon’s nursery some distinctive everyday detail. Provision includes Little Explorers for two-year-olds alongside the nursery class, within Beacon Primary School in Horwich. Separate teaching roles are allocated to Little Explorers and Nursery, giving each group its own place in the school’s staffing structure.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 and 29 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Early learning has a clear emphasis on stories and language. Children joining the early years foundation stage (EYFS) take a storybook home, and parents are invited to choose a book with their child each week. This makes shared reading something families can take part in from the start.
The Lilac Band contains 22 picture-led books, spanning fiction and non-fiction. With no written words to decode, children can explore the pictures and how a story unfolds. The books are designed to develop language and understanding of stories, giving parents a practical starting point for conversation about a book.
In March 2023, the early years curriculum, including provision for two-year-olds, was well planned and gave children a positive foundation for learning. The emphasis here is on the youngest children’s learning, rather than borrowing claims about older pupils’ results.
Settling into familiar routines matters for young children. In March 2023, routines became established promptly in early years and the youngest children adjusted well to school. This provides a dated indication of how children managed the move into the setting.
Brush Bus adds a practical care activity: nursery children learn to brush their teeth under supervision. Practising the movement of brushing turns dental care into something children do themselves, with adult support.
For additional needs, the school’s SENCO can be reached through the main office. Parents with concerns about support can discuss them with the class teacher and SENCO. The school meal service is provided by Dolce; its ordering system lets parents review ingredients and allergy information. Food intolerances can be entered by parents or discussed with school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, via Bolton Council.
The nursery class has links with Reception, allowing children to meet its teacher and other key adults. Familiar faces can help with the change of class, but this transition activity is separate from the allocation of a school place.
For three-year-olds, the funded nursery pattern is five mornings, 8.45am to 11.45am, or five afternoons, 12.30pm to 3.30pm, covering 15 hours. Eligible children can attend the 30-hour pattern from 8.45am to 3.30pm each day. Eligibility must be checked, a code supplied through a Parent Declaration Form, and the place confirmed after checks with the authority.
Extra morning or afternoon sessions have limited capacity and are allocated in order of request. Staying through lunch incurs a daily charge, including for children using either funded pattern. Contact the school for current charges.
Little Explorers offers eligible two-year-olds 15 funded hours, subject to the relevant criteria.
