Rhymes, songs and stories give Bishop Bridgeman’s nursery a clear starting point: learning to listen and recognise sounds before reading takes hold. This is the nursery within Bishop Bridgeman CofE Primary School in Bolton, part of its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
At the September 2022 Ofsted inspection, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children settled promptly into school life, and the early years curriculum was ambitious and carefully planned.
Play and conversation are central to the nursery’s approach. The school aims to connect the different areas of early learning, giving children opportunities to develop understanding through active participation. In parent language, its EYFS approach brings talking, playing and learning together rather than treating them as unrelated parts of the day.
Early reading begins with songs and rhymes in nursery. In September 2022, these activities helped children develop awareness of the sounds needed for reading. Books also had a prominent place in the early years environment, and children enjoyed adults reading aloud. Listening to stories gives children another way to engage with language alongside joining in with familiar sounds.
There was a curriculum concern alongside those strengths. In September 2022, the sequencing of learning in one or two subjects needed more thought between early years and later school stages. The practical issue was continuity: nursery learning needed to connect more clearly with what children would learn next.
A nursery teacher and teaching assistants form the nursery team, within an early years structure that includes an EYFS lead. The school describes its early years practitioners as appropriately qualified and aims to treat each child as an individual.
Partnership with families starts with information from parents and previous childcare providers, with input from agencies such as the health visiting team. That gives staff a basis for understanding a child’s experiences before nursery. The September 2022 findings also give a useful settling picture: children adjusted quickly, and early years behaviour was positive during both learning and social time.
For concerns about additional needs, parents can contact the school’s SENDCo through the office email. Safeguarding arrangements include staff training on Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025. Parents should tell staff promptly about accidental injuries and explain their cause, helping adults understand any marks or injuries they notice.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Bolton Council’s normal admissions process.
For September 2026 entry, children registered as attending this nursery had an oversubscription priority after the sibling criterion and before proximity. That was a priority within an ordered set of criteria, not an automatic offer. The online application deadline for that cycle was 15 January 2026, which has passed. These details apply to that admissions cycle.
The school office handles enquiries at office@bishop-bridgeman.bolton.sch.uk or 01204 333466. School visits are welcomed when there is a vacancy in the relevant year group, so availability is conditional.
The address is Rupert Street, Great Lever, Bolton, BL3 6PY. On-site parking is limited; visitors should park on Rupert Street and register their vehicle at the main entrance. This is worth factoring into a planned visit.
