A 51-week year and a day extending to 6pm give Bolton School Nursery a practical character distinct from a school-term timetable. It caters for boys and girls aged 0–4 within Bolton School’s Primary Division, with both part-time and full-time places. The nursery address is Dobson Road, Bolton, BL1 4RL.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following its 10–12 October 2023 inspection, but provision for children aged 0–2 was excluded from that inspection. That distinction matters for families choosing care for a baby: the early years judgement cannot be applied to the youngest group.
Language gives the early learning its clearest focus. In October 2023, children’s communication was a priority across the early years, with adults reading poems and stories and children participating eagerly in rhymes and songs. These are concrete examples of learning within the early years foundation stage (EYFS): listening, speaking and joining in with other children.
Nursery children were enthusiastic about learning and enjoyed playing together in October 2023. For parents, that places shared play alongside adult-led reading as part of the experience, rather than making preparation for school solely about formal tasks.
Settling received positive attention in October 2023: staff helped new early years children become comfortable quickly and build friendships. This is a useful reassurance about the move from home into group care, within the age scope inspected.
Meals, nappies and snacks are included in the nursery fees unless a different arrangement is notified. Lunch is included in the current nursery charges. This brings everyday consumables into the usual payment structure, although agreed extracurricular activities can attract additional charges.
A Nursery Manager oversees daily operation. Staff monitor children’s wellbeing and progress and contact parents about concerns. Families must complete a medical questionnaire and share information about allergies, disabilities and additional needs; concerns about special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) go to the Nursery Manager. The nursery says it will make reasonable accommodations for children with disabilities, so individual requirements belong in the discussion before starting.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Beech House Infant School. Entry requires a separate application, a selective interview, satisfaction of admission requirements, and a formal offer and acceptance. Families apply directly to Bolton School through its Primary Division application route, rather than treating nursery enrolment as a school-place reservation.
Reception assessments typically run between September and April. Contact Primary Division admissions on 01204 434754 to begin that separate process.
Monday to Friday, morning sessions run from 7.30am to 12.30pm, afternoons from 1.30pm to 6pm, and full days from 7.30am to 6pm. Children must attend at least four half-day sessions each week. An additional paid early start covers 7am to 7.30am, with requests made one month ahead and submitted by the last Friday of each month.
The nursery operates for 51 weeks, closing at Christmas and on Bank Holidays. Eligible children can access 15 funded hours; where families accept funding for 38 weeks, the remaining 13 weeks require payment, as do services or sessions outside the funding. Ask the school for current charges.
To discuss availability or arrange a visit, call 01204 434732. Eight weeks’ written notice is required to reduce sessions or leave, including departure for school; otherwise fees in lieu apply. Plan that notice alongside the next school start.
