An allotment, balance bikes and caring for chicks give Church Road’s early years provision a practical character. These are named experiences in its EYFS programme, placing outdoor activity and encounters with living things alongside books and performance. The nursery belongs to Church Road Primary School on Captains Clough Road in Bolton and sits within its early years foundation stage (EYFS).
Listening and talking have a clear purpose here. In March 2025, Ofsted identified a nursery focus on developing children’s communication and extending the words they use. For a young child, that means language development is a central learning priority, rather than something left to happen incidentally.
Drawing Club features in the EYFS enhancements programme, alongside a visit from an author and World Book Day. Together, these give books and drawing a place beyond routine classroom work. The programme also includes a pantomime at Victoria Halls, offering an encounter with live performance.
Outdoor experiences bring another dimension. The allotment and balance bikes sit alongside Moss Bank Park in the early years programme; caring for chicks introduces contact with animals. A fire engine visit and a dental nurse visit bring people with practical roles into children’s learning. These are shared EYFS enhancements, so they describe the early years programme rather than a timetable promised for each nursery session.
For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the class teacher is the first contact, with the inclusion lead coordinating support. The school’s approach to identifying needs draws on observations, concerns from families and contact with a child’s previous preschool. That gives parents a direct role in raising difficulties and sharing what they already know about their child.
Speech and Language Therapy and the Woodbridge SEND Service are among the school’s external partners. Its inclusion policy also describes sensory programmes and practical access adaptations, including entrance ramps and low stair handrails. These are school arrangements, relevant to discussing the support a nursery child may need.
Adaptations to learning. The March 2025 inspection raised a school-wide concern that teaching adjustments did not always meet the needs of disadvantaged pupils or pupils with SEND. Families whose children need additional help should weigh this concern alongside the support arrangements. It is not a finding confined to the nursery.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline.
Transition activities serve a different purpose: helping children prepare for the change. Church Road’s nursery-to-Reception arrangements include a parent meeting led by the headteacher and visits in the latter part of the summer term. Its SEND provision also allows a personalised transition plan where this would help a child. Familiarity with the next classroom and planning for individual needs remain separate from the allocation of places.
