Listening to sounds, learning routines and becoming independent give Gaskell's nursery its character. This is the school's own Nursery class in Bolton, within its early years provision, with children starting from age three. Ofsted graded early years Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Early reading starts with listening. Phase 1 phonics helps nursery children recognise surrounding sounds and practise joining spoken sounds together or separating them out. Read, Write Inc. is introduced in the summer term. The emphasis gives children a foundation for reading before the next stage of school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines care with learning. Its areas include movement, communication and emotional development, alongside early number work, literacy, creativity and discovering the world. Play includes both children's own choices and adult guidance. These are the framework's expectations, rather than a timetable of formal subjects.
Independence is another daily task. In January 2025, children in Nursery and Reception settled promptly, became familiar with routines and developed friendships. Learning how to take part in the group sits alongside preparation for reading.
Each early years child has a Key Worker, giving the family a main contact within the team. Bilingual help can be offered for some languages where needed. A wellbeing mentor can also help a new child settle or support a child through a difficult period. These are useful routes for discussing how a child is coping.
For children needing significant individual support in early years, the school can apply to the local authority for Early Years Inclusion Funding or support. This is conditional support, not an automatic allocation. The school's SEND arrangements include Pupil Passports, with parents involved in targets and termly reviews. Concerns begin with the class teacher and can be discussed with the SEND coordinator.
Food and personal care feature in the school's EYFS welfare checklist: it covers gathering dietary and allergy information, access to drinking water, medicine permissions and checks on sleeping children. Discussing a child's health needs belongs alongside planning their learning.
The school building has one storey, broad corridors and level entrances with wide doors. Those physical features matter for families considering mobility and access needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bolton's normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. The local authority administers school admissions.
Transition support is a separate matter. The SEND coordinator and Early Years Leader discuss children who may struggle with changing phases, and specific activities can be planned where appropriate. That planning supports the child through change; it does not determine admission.

The school requires uniform for its children. Its clothing list includes a white polo shirt, grey trousers and an azure blue sweatshirt, with black footwear. Label clothing clearly so it can be returned to your child. Smart Clothing and the school are the named routes for buying logo uniform.
