Nursery at Gilnow Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Child-chosen play and a self-contained outdoor area give Gilnow’s nursery its shape. Provision for three- and four-year-olds sits within the school’s foundation stage unit, bringing nursery and Reception accommodation together while keeping the nursery day focused on younger children’s learning.

The building is single storey, and the foundation stage provision includes access to a disabled bathroom. These are practical features for families considering physical accessibility. Morning attendance and full-day places give parents different ways to fit nursery into family life.

The Nursery Day

Play has room alongside adult-led learning. Staff organise activities around themes, working with children individually, in groups and as a class. Children also choose their own play with friends. Adults join in, observe and interact, using what they learn about each child to plan the next steps rather than treating every child’s interests as identical.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers seven learning areas. In parent terms, that means developing language, movement and relationships alongside early reading, maths, creative expression and an understanding of the world. The self-contained outdoor area gives the foundation stage a dedicated space beyond the classroom.

Nursery art includes mixing colours, adding detail to drawn faces and expressing emotions through pictures. Geography starts close to children’s experience: exploring natural materials through their senses, describing familiar routes and discussing places using positional words. These activities connect making and exploring with learning to explain an idea.

Mathematics is similarly concrete. Children compare objects, copy patterns, build using solid shapes and investigate capacity. This gives early mathematical language something tangible to attach to. Ofsted’s inspection on 7 and 8 June 2022 found that children in early years enjoyed adult-read stories and had the skills and knowledge needed for their next stage.

Care and Support

Staffing includes a nursery teacher and EYFS learning assistants. Daily contact is part of the early-years arrangements: staff share significant achievements or concerns with parents and are generally available when a session ends. An annual progress report adds a written account of learning.

Additional needs are coordinated through the school’s SENCo and SEND team. Individual learning programmes are shared with parents, and outside professionals can contribute when needed. Some teaching assistants are bilingual, while pastoral support and help for children beginning to learn English sit alongside learning support. This gives families several routes for discussing a child’s needs.

Food provision across the school includes hot lunches from Bolton Council, vegetarian choices and support for medical dietary needs or allergies. Early-years children receive fruit each day. Families using a full-day nursery place should distinguish lunch arrangements from the nursery session itself when agreeing attendance.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Gilnow’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Sharing a foundation stage unit is a feature of the accommodation; it does not secure a school place.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 8:55 to 11:55. The nursery offers part-time and full-time education across five days a week, with funded and paid full-day places depending on parents’ working status. Ask the school for current charges when arranging a paid place.

For nursery enquiries, contact the office on 01204 333724 or email office@gilnow.bolton.sch.uk. Visits can also be arranged through the office, giving families an opportunity to see the accommodation before choosing a place.
