Daily Dough Disco, familiar picture books and time outdoors give Johnson Fold’s nursery day its character. Provision covers children aged two, three and four, with separate rooms for the two age groups on the school’s lower ground floor. This is the school’s own nursery on Worston Avenue in Bolton.
The distinction between the groups matters. Younger children concentrate on communication, relationships and physical development; the older nursery adds more explicit work with sounds, number and creative materials. Both have morning and afternoon sessions, giving families a choice between two parts of the day.
Stories and movement are recurring ingredients. In the two-year-old provision, children return to a selection of picture books and classic stories through the Reading Spine, alongside regularly sung songs and nursery rhymes. Familiarity gives children repeated opportunities to hear and use language. An enclosed Outdoor Area provides space for exploration and play beyond the nursery room.
For three- and four-year-olds, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven connected areas of learning. In everyday terms, that means learning to talk, build relationships and move confidently, alongside early literacy, maths, understanding the world and creative expression. Discussions happen in small key person groups as well as with the whole class, so conversation has several settings.
Phase 1 Phonics includes listening to sounds in the environment, noticing rhythm and rhyme, and practising spoken blending and segmenting. The Reading Spine returns to familiar books throughout the year to build vocabulary. Daily Squiggle While You Wiggle and Dough Disco activities develop coordination and control for later writing. Number games and songs introduce shape and number, with activities taking place outside as well as indoors. Children also explore materials and investigate people, places, technology and their surroundings.
Each two-year-old has a Key Person, giving their care a named role within the team. Older nursery children also take part in discussions with their key person groups, connecting social contact with opportunities to speak and listen. Support with feelings, relationships and self-confidence forms part of their curriculum.
Across the school, Johnson Fold aims to make learning accessible to children from different backgrounds. Its Universal & Early Help Assessment Offer addresses additional advice and support for families. This places nursery care within a wider school approach to inclusion.
Food has a practical place in the day. The school kitchen prepares hot lunches, and menus can be checked in advance. School snacks are free and may be fruit, biscuits or toast. At the 8:30 opening, all children can have toast and a drink free of charge, making breakfast part of the morning routine.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families need a separate Reception application through Bolton’s online admissions route at www.bolton.gov.uk/admissions, meeting the deadline for their entry year.
For the 2026 Reception intake, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. Treat the nursery application and the later school application as separate decisions; a nursery place should never be taken as confirmation of a Reception place.
Both nursery age groups run morning sessions from 8:30 to 11:30 and afternoon sessions from 12:15 to 15:15. Full-time nursery places are also offered. Families can contact the school office for current charges.
Eligible two-year-olds have an entitlement of 15 hours per week. For children aged three and above, 15 hours of free nursery provision is offered, with 30-hour funding for eligible children. The office can check eligibility for the two-year-old provision.
Nursery enquiries and application forms go through the school office: telephone 01204 333011 or email office@johnsonfold.bolton.sch.uk. Places depend on availability. Visits take place on ordinary school days and can be arranged by telephone, giving families an opportunity to see the school during its usual routine.
