Language and sounds start early at Oxford Grove: children encounter phonics from the beginning of the Nursery class. That gives this school nursery a clear focus on the first steps towards reading, alongside learning how to behave and care for other children.
The provision belongs to Oxford Grove Primary School on Shepherd Cross Street in Bolton. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 2 and 3 February 2023. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Phonics gives children a structured introduction to language and sounds. In February 2023, the nursery's phonics curriculum engaged children's interest, and staff had training to teach it confidently. For parents, the useful distinction is that this work begins in Nursery: early reading has a place in the curriculum from the outset.
Outdoor learning provides another strand of the early years experience. The early years team plans opportunities for children to work independently and with one another in its outdoor learning environment. That gives children different ways to participate, with space for both their own activity and learning alongside peers. The Step Outside award recognises this outdoor provision.
Staff development also has a named early years focus. Step into Quality involves the team reviewing its practice and provision through eight steps within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS is the framework for young children's learning and development. Here, that includes exploring language and sounds, learning to care for others, and opportunities to work alone and with other children. Here, the practical emphasis is on adults examining what they provide for young children. Taken together, the phonics curriculum, outdoor environment and team reflection are the clearest features of the nursery's learning approach.
Learning to care for others is part of the early years experience. In February 2023, children were learning expectations for behaviour alongside consideration for one another. For a young child joining a group, these social lessons matter as well as the introduction to sounds: the nursery experience includes learning how to be with other children.
Families have school-level contact routes for additional needs and wellbeing. A SEN coordinator and a Safeguarding and Wellbeing Mentor can be reached through the school telephone number. These are distinct roles, giving parents an identified route for discussing learning needs or wellbeing concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Oxford Grove. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for a school place as two separate decisions; attendance itself is no assurance of admission.
The school office is the enquiry contact, by telephone on 01204 333380 or email at office@oxford-grove.bolton.sch.uk. Oxford Grove's address is Shepherd Cross Street, Bolton, BL1 3EJ.
Keep the office informed when your telephone number, email or address changes. This is a practical responsibility for families: the school needs current details to maintain contact. Parents can also request paper copies of website information through the office.
