Play, early sounds and established preschool routines shape the starting point at Pikes Lane. This is the school's own nursery provision on Gibraltar Street in Bolton, with provision for two-year-olds and staff groups labelled Nursery 2 and Nursery 3. It gives younger children a place within the primary school before compulsory schooling.
The early years provision was graded Requires improvement at Ofsted's inspection on 7 and 8 January 2025. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the important distinction is between the established routines and the weaknesses in how learning was organised.
Structured play forms part of nursery learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach includes exploring the world through play: children learn about people and their surroundings alongside developing relationships, confidence and behaviour. These are everyday learning experiences, rather than simply preparation for formal lessons.
The early years curriculum includes sensory activities, stories and role play, with outdoor learning also listed. Yoga and meditation sit alongside creative activities and resources that children can use in different ways. The mix gives families a picture of learning that includes movement, imagination and conversation.
In January 2025, children in early years enjoyed practising early sounds, and phonics teaching was delivered well. Writing needed more attention. Support for early writing was too slow, while staff differed in their choice of writing implements and in how they helped children develop pencil control and form letters.
Parts of the early years curriculum also lacked a clear sequence of essential knowledge. This limited how securely children could build on earlier learning. Those concerns matter alongside the play activities: an appealing activity needs a clear learning purpose and timely adult support.
Preschool routines were already established in January 2025, giving children a consistent structure to follow. Staffing includes teaching assistant roles with morning and afternoon assignments. The school also has a special educational needs coordinator, providing a contact point for families discussing additional needs.
Family Fridays invite parents into school to work on learning activities with their child, talk with teachers and review learning journeys. These school family sessions provide an opportunity to connect classroom learning with conversations at home. Curriculum information is also shared at Meet the Teacher Events, with opportunities during the year to see children's learning develop.
Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the school's designated safeguarding leads. This gives parents a direct route for concerns about a child's welfare.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the relevant deadline. Treat that application as a separate decision from choosing nursery; familiarity with the school does not secure admission.
The school office is the enquiry contact: telephone 01204 333633 or email office@pikes-lane.bolton.sch.uk. Pikes Lane's address is Gibraltar Street, Bolton, BL3 5HU. Office hours run from 8:30am to 3:30pm, giving families a daytime contact window for nursery enquiries.
