Nursery at SS Osmund and Andrew's R.C. Primary School

Choosing tools and learning to use them independently gives this nursery a concrete emphasis: small practical skills matter. Children can select scissors themselves, with adults teaching their use rather than directing every activity. This is the school's own Nursery Class in Bolton, distinct from Little Ozzie's, which operates separately. Families need to keep that distinction clear when enquiring.
The nursery belongs to a Catholic primary school on Falkirk Drive, Breightmet. Reflection includes even the youngest children, so faith is part of the educational setting families are choosing.
Independence takes a practical form here. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the school uses Development Matters to guide work on hand control and using tools. Scissors are available for children to choose, and children are taught how to handle them. Cutting paper gives them practice in managing a tool for themselves.
There is a clear qualification for parents: some scissor activities may take place without direct adult supervision. The school says classroom staffing meets legal ratios, while acknowledging that it cannot prevent every instance of a child cutting their own hair. Families are asked to reinforce sitting down to cut and keeping scissors for card or paper.
Reading also has a regular place. In January 2023, children across early years had daily opportunities to enjoy books, supporting communication skills. The emphasis is on enjoying reading as well as developing language.
Outdoor preparation is practical too. Early-years children need wellies and a waterproof suit they can manage themselves. These requirements make dressing for wet conditions another opportunity to practise independence.
In January 2023, early-years children benefited from warm, considerate relationships with staff. That matters for young children learning to seek help and trust adults beyond home.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school's support includes teaching adjustments and individual or small-group intervention. Parents begin by speaking to their child's class teacher. Regular review meetings bring families into discussions about progress and support strategies, while the Rainbow Room supports regulation within the school's pastoral provision.
SEND support follows an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle, with termly assessments and individual support plan reviews. This gives families a recurring point to discuss changing needs.
Food rules require families to keep products containing nuts out of school because some children have allergies. Fresh fruit and vegetables are among the permitted break-time snacks. Named water bottles should return home each evening, giving families a simple care routine to maintain.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. For September 2027 entry, Bolton applications use the Citizen Portal and close on 15 January 2027. Treat that application as a separate task from joining nursery.
Transition activities address familiarity rather than admission. A Move Up Morning was scheduled for 2 July 2026 for children from EYFS to Year 5, with time alongside their next teacher in their next classroom. SEND transition support also includes visits, liaison between settings and sharing information about children's needs.
Nursery enquiries go to the school office on 01204 333070 or office@ss-osands.bolton.sch.uk. In July 2026, the nursery reported that September 2026 places were full, with a waiting list, and invited enquiries for September 2027.
Children in nursery do not need a PE kit. Early-years families should supply named spare clothes, wellies and a waterproof suit; spare clothing stays on the child's peg. Generic sweatshirts and cardigans are accepted alongside branded uniform.
Adults should accompany younger children to the entrance and hand them over to staff. Use pedestrian access rather than the staff car park. Brodick Drive Gate and the Tansy Pub Car Park Gate became the drop-off and collection routes in September 2025, following near-misses on Falkirk Drive. Allow time for the walk from parking to the door.
