Putting on a coat, taking turns and solving a problem together: these small steps give St George's nursery its character. Part of St George's CofE Primary School in Westhoughton, Bolton, the provision combines preparation for the next classroom with learning to manage everyday life.
The early years provision met Ofsted's Expected standard in the report dated 31 March 2026. Nursery children developed the knowledge and skills needed for the move to Reception. For parents, that gives a useful picture of preparation, while keeping the focus on what children learn now.
Learning has a planned sequence. The early years curriculum identifies what children should learn, and activities return to familiar learning before adding something new. In plain parent language, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here involves developing communication, physical skills and the ability to work with other children, alongside building knowledge. Tasks that practise coordination and balance give physical development a practical place in the day. Cooperative problem-solving gives children reasons to listen and contribute.
Supersonic Phonics Friends supports the teaching sequence for phonics and reading across early years and beyond. The school also uses Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE from EYFS onwards, covering relationships, wellbeing and safety. This connects learning with understanding feelings and getting along with others.
Language support. In March 2026, activities generally helped children develop speech and vocabulary, but adult support varied. Opportunities to extend children's understanding and use of unfamiliar words were sometimes missed. Greater consistency in this work was an early years improvement priority, making everyday conversation an important point for parents to consider.
Routines are part of settling. In March 2026, early years staff helped children adjust promptly to routines and begin learning how to take turns. That supports participation in shared activities as well as the practical business of being in a group.
Independence also gets attention through everyday care. Children practise putting their coats on themselves. Healthy snacks provide opportunities to learn about food, including why fruit and vegetables are beneficial. These are manageable steps towards doing more for themselves.
For additional needs, families can contact the Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator through the office. The school says it identifies barriers early, introduces support as needed and involves families in decisions. That gives parents a route into discussing their child's needs with the team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Preparation for the next stage and allocation of a school place are separate matters; plan for both.
Nursery sessions run from 08:30 to 11:30 and from 12:30 to 15:30. These distinct time slots matter when fitting collection around work or other children.
