Nursery at The Gates Primary School

Stay and Learn sessions give families a part in the early years learning at The Gates Primary School: reading, maths and physical literacy each had an event scheduled during 2025 and 2026. These are concrete opportunities to connect home and school learning.
The nursery belongs to The Gates Primary School on Bristle Hall Way in Westhoughton, Bolton. Its own induction events sit alongside activities for the wider early years group, so nursery-specific preparation and shared early years occasions both feature.
Reading, writing and understanding the world feature in the early years programme of Stay and Learn events. A reading session was scheduled for 17 September 2025, followed by maths on 19 November. A writing session was scheduled for 28 January 2026. For parents, these subject-focused occasions offer a way into children's learning through a particular activity rather than a general meeting.
Physical literacy had a session scheduled for 25 March 2026, followed by understanding the world on 29 April. The early years sports event was scheduled for 4 June 2026. Movement therefore has a place among these named occasions, alongside reading and writing.
Seasonal activities add another dimension. An early years Chinese New Year workshop was scheduled for 28 January 2025, and Christmas songs with mince pies were scheduled for 11 December 2025. A Teddy Bears' Picnic and graduation Stay and Learn event was scheduled for 15 July 2026. These are dated examples of the early years programme, rather than a timetable for an ordinary nursery session.
Preparation for starting nursery includes dedicated transition occasions. A nursery induction session was scheduled for 2 July 2025, and a session for new nursery children was scheduled for 1 July 2026. Such occasions give families an introduction before the new start.
Parents also have opportunities to take part separately from children's induction. A meeting for incoming nursery and Reception families was scheduled for 18 June 2025. A parent evening including nursery families was scheduled for 12 February 2025, offering an occasion to discuss their child as well as participate in shared learning events.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Transition activity is a different matter from admission. A joint induction occasion for new nursery and Reception children was scheduled for 1 July 2026. That offers preparation for starting, but it should not be read as an admissions advantage for children already attending nursery.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01942 634734. Nursery open mornings were offered on 3 February and 7 May 2026, with families asked to telephone the office to join the attendance list. Those dates have passed; they describe the 2026 visiting cycle.
The office contact provides a direct starting point for families interested in the nursery at the Westhoughton school.
