Stories, rhymes and routines give this nursery its clearest character. At St Robert Bellarmine Catholic Primary School on Harris Drive in Bootle, the Nursery class introduces children to shared reading and establishes expectations for behaviour from the start. That combines enjoyment of language with learning how to take part in school life.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 2 and 3 July 2024. This is an early years judgement within the school's inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Reading begins with listening and joining in. In July 2024, Nursery children enjoyed sharing rhymes and hearing stories, making books a social activity as well as an introduction to reading. For a parent choosing an early school experience, that emphasis on enjoyment matters: the starting point is engagement with language.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for early learning, takes account of individual interests and needs. The nursery's art objectives make this tangible. Children experiment with mixing colours, develop drawings with more detail and use pictures to communicate feelings. A face can begin with a circular outline and gain features as their drawing develops. Art gives children another way to express an idea or emotion.
Catholic learning also has a named approach: Come and See covers the Foundation Stage. Its activities and resources introduce Catholic teachings in ways suited to children's ages. Faith therefore forms part of the learning experience families are choosing here.
Behaviour routines begin in Nursery. The July 2024 findings describe expectations being established as children start, giving them a clear introduction to how the class works.
Support sits within the school's approach to inclusion. Learning spaces use visual prompts and predictable routines, while teaching can be adjusted to address barriers. Additional help may take place individually or in small groups, with assessment informing support and subsequent reviews. These are practical mechanisms for responding to different needs, rather than expecting every child to participate in precisely the same way.
Families have a direct route to discuss concerns with the SEND coordinator through the school office. The school's support approach includes working with parents and outside professionals, connecting what happens at home with help in school. Safeguarding procedures include annual staff training and paediatric first aid staff who support care and medicine administration.
A separate application. Attending Nursery does not guarantee admission to Reception at St Robert Bellarmine. Families must apply again through Sefton's normal Reception application route and meet the applicable deadline.
The route given is Sefton's starting-school service, leading to the Citizen Portal. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions: accepting a nursery place does not remove the need to submit that later application.
Nursery enquiries go through the school office, which provides the application form. For an allocated September start, notification usually comes in March. That gives families a point in the application process around which to plan.
Contact the office on 0151 922 1216 or email admin.strobertbellarmine@schools.sefton.gov.uk. The school is on Harris Drive, Bootle, L20 6ED. The same office email provides access to the SEND coordinator, so parents can raise support needs through an established contact route.
