Nursery at The Pines School

Sandpits, balancing beams and a day shaped by children's interests give the nursery at The Pines School its character. Beech is the nursery class, an on-site provision for pre-school children within the school in Bracknell. Its classroom and outdoor space allow children to choose resources independently, making choice part of learning rather than a break from it.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Children's interests help determine what happens next. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach combines planning in the moment with attention to each child's next steps. Development Matters guides that planning. A nursery theme anchors each half term, with related songs, poems, stories and non-fiction supporting language and vocabulary. The nursery gives the Prime Areas of Learning priority, so its planning starts with children's early development.
Independently accessible resources support that approach. Children can move between outdoors and indoors, choosing where to pursue an interest. Water trays and sensory tuff trays provide materials to explore; junk modelling and playdough offer opportunities to create. For movement, there are crates, large tyres and balancing beams. Roleplay and small world resources sit alongside musical instruments and stages, giving children different ways to express ideas.
Early reading begins in nursery. In January 2023, children were interested in learning, and teachers adapted learning after getting to know them. That combination matters: the child-led approach has adult attention behind it, rather than leaving the next step entirely to chance.
Settling was a strength in January 2023: nursery children formed good connections with adults and other children and adjusted promptly to school life. Weekly learning letters keep parents informed about what children are exploring, providing a starting point for conversations at home.
Support also sits within the wider school's team structure. A SENDCo holds the government qualification for the role, and a governor has responsibility for special educational needs and disabilities. The school aims to include every child and has procedures for recognising needs, assessing them and reviewing provision.
Emotional support includes the ELSA system, with work on friendships, emotional awareness and self-esteem. The Retreat is the school's dedicated nurture space, where its pastoral team helps children recognise and express difficult feelings. These are school-wide resources, so they should be understood in that context rather than as a separate nursery programme.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal local authority process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. Bracknell Forest residents applied through Bracknell Forest; families living elsewhere had to use their home local authority. That cycle has passed. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am, while the afternoon runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. An Extended Lunch session bridges 11.45am to 12.15pm. The option labelled 30 Hours (Full Day) runs from 8.45am to 3.15pm. Those timings make the difference between a shorter session and a day spanning both sessions clear.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office at admin@thepinesschool.org.uk. Parents should tell the office about collection by another authorised person or arrival and collection at different times. This gives the school the information it needs to manage changes to the usual arrangements.
