Nursery at Lionel Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Stories, rhyme and learning to make sense of written words give Lionel’s nursery a clear language focus. Read, Write, Inc. begins in Nursery, while Voice21’s Oracy Framework supports speaking and listening from the early years. For families, that means spoken language and the beginnings of reading sit alongside each other from the start.
This is Lionel Primary School’s own nursery on Lionel Road North in Brentford. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 4 and 5 March 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Framework shapes learning across seven areas of development. Lionel combines this with an emphasis on children working together, giving cooperation a place alongside individual learning. The practical emphasis is on developing skills with other children, as well as acquiring knowledge.
Language has several routes into the day. Storytelling, poetry and rhyme provide models of spoken language, with daily opportunities to speak and listen across learning. Voice21’s Oracy Framework gives this work a named approach. Children hear language used for different purposes, rather than encountering it only during a single language activity.
Read, Write, Inc. introduces decoding from Nursery: learning to turn written letters into sounds and words. In March 2025, early years staff used challenging vocabulary when speaking with children, and books chosen to include different experiences helped build enjoyment of reading. This places understanding and pleasure alongside the mechanics of recognising words.
Settling arrangements can include a home visit for children joining Nursery. Where possible, staff also contact a child’s previous setting to understand additional needs. These steps give families a way to share relevant information before the change of setting.
For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities, the class teacher is the first contact, with the SENDCo available for further discussion. Support decisions draw on staff observations, assessments and parents’ concerns. Referrals to external professionals are discussed with parents beforehand, keeping families involved in decisions about additional help.
Children receiving SEN Support have an Individual Education Plan, with targets and strategies. Parents of children on the SEND register receive termly calls or meetings to discuss progress against those targets. Physical access matters too: the school building accommodates wheelchair users, and the Early Years block has an accessible toilet.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the London Borough of Hounslow’s online admissions route. The deadline given for September 2026 entry was 15 January 2026; that application cycle is now past.
Transition support is a separate matter. Arrangements may include meeting the next teaching team towards the end of the year and a parent spending a morning in class with their child before Reception begins. Familiarity can help with the change, but it does not secure admission.
Nursery applications go directly to the school, using its application form. Completed forms are sent to schooladmissions@lionel.hounslow.sch.uk with the child’s birth certificate and a recent council tax bill. General enquiries go to office@lionel.hounslow.sch.uk. This gives families distinct contacts for asking questions and submitting an application.
No. Nursery attendance does not guarantee admission to Reception, and families must apply separately through Hounslow’s online admissions route.
Read, Write, Inc. introduces decoding from Nursery. Speaking and listening are also supported through Voice21’s Oracy Framework.
Yes. Home visits are among the possible arrangements for children joining Nursery, rather than a promised step for every family.
Start with the class teacher. Further discussion can be arranged with the SENDCo, and parents are consulted before an external referral.
Send the completed nursery application form to schooladmissions@lionel.hounslow.sch.uk with a copy of the child’s birth certificate and a recent council tax bill.
