On the brow of the Black Country ridge between Dudley and Stourbridge, Brierley Hill spent much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries among England's foremost glass and steel towns. Round Oak Steelworks once dominated the southern fringe before the site was redeveloped in the 1980s as the Merry Hill Shopping Centre, now the borough's commercial anchor. Quarry Bank is among the most sought-after areas for primary catchments in the town, while Brockmoor has long been a school-competitive quarter nearby. Amblecote extends the residential sweep southward. Stourbridge Junction provides rail access to Birmingham city centre, and around 13,900 people lived across the town at the last census. Brierley Hill has served as the Strategic Town Centre of Dudley Borough since 2008.
