Counting games outdoors, dance and a classroom feelings chart give Badminton’s youngest children several ways to learn and express themselves. This is girls’ nursery provision from age three, called Pre-Reception within Badminton School Prep, on the school’s main campus in Bristol.
The ISI inspection of 2 to 4 December 2025 recorded one Nursery class and found that early years teaching helped children gain confidence, communicate effectively and build friendships. Those findings concern the school’s early years provision, rather than a separate nursery grade.
Practical activity gives early learning its shape. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children build the foundations of communication, reading and mathematics: adults introduce the connections between sounds and letters, while sorting and putting objects in order develops an understanding of number. Counting then moves outside, where games help children recognise quantities and become more accurate. Number work has something children can handle and do.
Outdoor areas provide equipment for active play. Dance develops larger movements alongside the finer control needed for writing, and regular outdoor play supports physical development. Children also explore how exercise changes their heart rate, making learning about their bodies concrete.
Social learning is practical too. Role play introduces respect for different people, while adults demonstrate considerate behaviour and encourage children to share, wait their turn and play together. A toy exchange gives children an example of helping others through something familiar. Cultural and religious celebrations introduce different traditions; mindfulness activities during a wellbeing week add another way to think about feelings.
Settling rests on predictable routines and attentive adults. In December 2025, early years staff provided reassurance within a calm daily structure, helping the youngest children feel settled. A classroom chart uses colours to help children indicate their mood, giving them a way to express feelings as their vocabulary develops.
Care has practical safeguards behind it. Early years staffing ratios were suitable, and staff with paediatric first aid qualifications were deployed appropriately. Children knew how to ask for help when hurt or unwell. Protection arrangements explicitly included the early years, with effective systems for addressing risks to children.
Additional needs. The admissions policy requires parents to share details of disabilities or special educational needs when enrolling. It also acknowledges limited disability facilities and provides for consultation about reasonable adjustments, so suitability depends on the school being able to meet the child’s needs.
The school’s meal arrangements make hot lunches compulsory, with choices accommodating dietary requirements and preferences. Lunch is invoiced separately. Families should use the school’s current charges when budgeting.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the Admissions Team to confirm the Reception arrangements for children already attending Pre-Reception.
For prospective Reception applicants, the published route is directly through Badminton’s registration and EYFS assessment process. The school identifies Reception as an entry point and describes a nursery or home visit and a meeting with an early years or Prep leader. An offer depends on space and the school’s selection requirements. Familiarity with the campus should remain separate from the question of admission.
Pre-Reception charges are organised by term, within an academic year comprising Autumn, Spring and Summer. The Admissions Team handles enquiries by telephone on 0117 9055 271 or through the Enquiry Form.
Private tours can be booked at a convenient time. For a more focused introduction, Pre-Reception and Reception Stay & Play sessions last an hour and include crafts, toys and learning resources, giving families time to meet early years staff and discuss starting school.
