Nursery at Broomhill Infant & Nursery School

At a Glance

Sandpit play, sensory trays and weekly Forest School give Broomhill’s nursery a practical, outdoorsy character. Saplings and Seedlings are its two nursery classes, part of Broomhill Infant & Nursery School on Fermaine Avenue in Brislington, Bristol. Children start from age three.

The school’s Nature, Nurture, Knowledge curriculum links learning to the natural world and children’s interests. This is a nursery where blocks, stories and movement provide starting points for learning. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 19 and 20 October 2022; that is an early years judgement within the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Saplings brings the learning into focus. Wake Up, Shake Up uses dancing and singing, with music also supporting counting and rhythm. Sensory tuff trays encourage exploration and conversation; building blocks give children something to construct and imagine together. In the sandpit, children dig, make castles and experiment with tools, while playdough provides another material to roll and shape.

Stories have an active role. In October 2022, nursery children used props to dramatise a story about a bear hunt. Early years children also compared conkers and explored how much containers could hold using water and sand. These examples make the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) tangible for parents: language and mathematical ideas develop through things children handle, discuss and try. The school starts its phonics approach in Nursery.

Outdoor learning has a regular place in the week. Forest School includes den construction, mud kitchens and walks in nature, with supported challenges such as balancing on logs. The school grounds include a forest school area. For children who enjoy movement and making things, this gives learning room to extend beyond the classroom.

Care and Support

Seedlings has a class teacher who is also a SENDCo, supported by Learning and Play Assistants; Saplings has a class lead and Learning and Play Assistants. Attention Autism is used in Saplings to work on communication and shared attention. Families seeking SEND support can approach the mainstream or resource base SENDCo, with help covering Education Health Care Plan processes and professional referrals.

Tapestry gives parents access to photographs, observations and updates about learning, with space to contribute comments. Class Dojo carries class communication. These provide different ways to stay involved in a child’s day.

Lunch can be a purchased hot meal or a packed lunch from home, with no lunch charge for the packed-lunch option. The later Dinner session includes a hot meal, so families booking afternoon care can include food in that arrangement.

Moving On to Reception

Separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the local council’s online admissions system, following the normal Reception deadline. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery sessions.

Preparation for the change is a different matter. For the 2026 Reception intake, Stay and Play sessions were planned for June and July, inviting children to explore classrooms and gardens and meet classmates and teachers. The planned activities were intended to help children become familiar with the next setting; they did not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, with afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. The core funded-hours window is 8:45am to 3:15pm. Term-time patterns cover 15 or 30 hours weekly across 38 weeks; the all-year arrangement spreads 24 hours weekly over 47.5 weeks. The Monday-to-Friday nursery option is for working parents eligible for a 30-hour place.

Additional sessions are booked through Parent Mail. Breakfast starts at 7:30am, while the Dinner session finishes at 6pm in term time and 5:30pm in half term. Evergreens covers nursery breakfast, after-school and holiday care. Ask the school for current charges. Bank holidays, the final August week and two Christmas weeks are closure periods, which matter when planning work cover.

Register nursery interest using the admission-page waiting-list form. Tours can be requested through the contact-page visit form, or contact the office on 0117 353 4440 or broomhilli@bristol-schools.uk.

The school clothing guidance recommends easy toilet access, slip-on shoes and named spare clothes. Winter outdoor learning calls for wellington boots and warm waterproof clothing: dress for the activities rather than keeping clothes pristine.
