Nursery at Cheddar Grove Primary School

Independence, number work and learning to play together give Cheddar Grove’s early years its character. In June 2023, children followed instructions attentively and managed routines with considerable independence. Those are useful foundations for a child beginning life in a group: listening to an adult matters, but so does learning to do things for yourself.
The nursery belongs to Cheddar Grove Primary School in Bedminster Down, Bristol, within the Futura Learning Partnership. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 27 and 28 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Learning combines early mathematical understanding with the social skills needed to share a session. In June 2023, early years children used their number knowledge confidently to tackle addition. They also cooperated in play and waited for their turn. For parents, these examples connect learning with everyday participation: children practise both working something out and making room for someone else.
The Futura curriculum begins at age 3. The school aims to build knowledge progressively so that children have the foundations for their next stage of learning. Its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) music curriculum includes listening, making music, performance and singing. In parent terms, that means children encounter music through participation as well as hearing it.
Music also accompanies ordinary routines, including singing as children tidy up. This gives it a place beyond a separate lesson and connects an activity children can join in with to the practical business of finishing a session.
Curriculum implementation. In June 2023, some foundation subjects across the school needed more effective teaching of the planned content so pupils could develop deeper knowledge. This was a wider school improvement requirement, rather than a nursery-specific finding; families should read it alongside the early years judgement.
Settling into group life was a strength of early years in June 2023. Children adapted promptly to unfamiliar routines and played cooperatively. For a parent concerned about the first weeks, that offers a concrete picture of children becoming comfortable with the expectations of the day.
Nursery children bring a packed lunch. Preparing food is therefore part of the family’s daily routine, rather than assuming that the school dinner arrangement applies to nursery.
Family support includes the Cheddar Grove Community Hub, based in the Scout Hut with access through the front gate. It provides household goods, school uniform and advice or support for families. The school’s SENCo can also be contacted through the office, giving parents a direct route for discussing special educational needs and disabilities.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, using Bristol City Council’s route and meeting the relevant deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as two distinct decisions.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0117 903 0418 or email office@cheddargroveschool.org.uk. A nursery application form is available. The office is also the contact point for the SENCo, so families can bring learning or support needs into the conversation when arranging their child’s start.
