Nursery at E-ACT Badock's Wood Academy

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Child-led play, outdoor exploration and growing independence shape the nursery offer at E-ACT Badock's Wood Academy. The academy announced a September 2026 nursery opening for children aged 3 years and above, placing this provision within its primary school in Southmead, Bristol. Its stated aim is to help children become confident, curious learners.

The timing matters. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 30 November and 1 December 2022; that judgement predates the announced nursery opening. It provides historical context for early years at the academy, rather than an assessment of the newly announced provision.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult-planned activities share the learning day. Children have opportunities to follow their own interests, alongside activities designed to develop movement, conversation, relationships and managing feelings. This gives the nursery's approach a practical focus: learning includes how children communicate and get along, as well as what they know.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework. In parent terms, the nursery describes learning matched to children's development and individual needs, with exploration and creativity built into its learning spaces. Outdoor activity and practical experiences are part of the offer, giving children opportunities to investigate and tackle problems. The emphasis is on active participation.

In November and December 2022, early years teaching developed children's spoken language through varied vocabulary, alongside initial reading and mathematics. Nursery phonics introduced the connection between letters and their sounds. These were concrete foundations for later learning, although they belong to that inspection period.

Care and Support

Getting to know each child is the nursery's stated approach to care. Staff aim to build security before encouraging children to attempt unfamiliar experiences. For a young child, that connects relationships with the confidence to explore; emotional development is also included in the planned activities.

Additional help sits within the academy's wider SEND provision. The school uses preparation before new learning, repeated practice and targeted support, and seeks parents' views throughout the year. It also works with external professionals and acts on their advice. These arrangements give families a role in discussing their child's needs.

During November and December 2022, early years teachers spotted children needing extra learning support and responded promptly. That is a dated finding about early identification, rather than a claim about current nursery staffing.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority in the normal admissions round, including when they live outside the academy's local area. Keep that application separate from the nursery booking: joining one does not secure the other.

Practical Information

Nursery applications use an online application process. Parents first register and create an account, then complete the application. This is distinct from the local-authority route for Reception.

Families can arrange a personal academy tour and contact the school at receptionbdw@e-act.org.uk or on 0117 903 0050. The academy is on Doncaster Road, Southmead, Bristol, BS10 5PU. A message form also provides a direct enquiry route.
