Traditional tales become role play at Little Forest Nursery, where adults help children act out stories rather than simply listen to them. That gives books a practical place in nursery learning: children can explore a story through both language and play.
Little Forest opened in September 2019 at Kings' Forest Primary School and caters for three and four year olds. It is the school's own nursery provision in Kingswood, Bristol. In November 2025, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision to be at the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play and adult teaching both have a place in the early years approach. Children have extended opportunities to pursue their own play each day, while adults use questions and starting points for exploration to develop their interests. Children's ideas contribute to planning, giving them some influence over what they investigate.
The Early Years Foundation Stage approach connects learning with personal and social development. Choosing an activity, managing resources and learning alongside others are part of the experience, rather than separate tasks. Children practise sharing turns, working together and reaching agreement. These are useful foundations for joining a group and sustaining play with another child.
Designated learning zones organise the resources, which children can reach independently. During periods of freely chosen activity, outdoor learning is accessible too. This gives children choices about where to learn and opportunities to take responsibility for the materials they use.
Language receives close attention. In November 2025, adult exchanges helped children build vocabulary, with conversations about seasonal changes, weather and outdoor temperatures providing concrete examples. Alongside nursery story enactment, this makes talk a tool for exploring both imaginary situations and the world around them.
Relationships support the start of nursery life. In November 2025, children in Nursery Year picked up routines and settled promptly. Across early years, adults understood families and children, and children developed trust in the adults caring for them. Familiar routines and relationships give children a basis for engaging with learning.
Support also begins early. Barriers to children's learning were recognised promptly on entry, with changes to the early years curriculum made in response. The practical implication is that teaching can be adjusted around a child's needs. Parent relationships are supported through a diary between home and school, explore mornings and an open door approach, creating several opportunities to exchange information.
Attending Little Forest Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Kings' Forest Primary School. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. South Gloucestershire School Admissions is the route, and the local authority makes the admission decisions. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

For outdoor learning, early years children need wellies and waterproof trousers and coats kept at school. Having these ready supports the indoor and outdoor pattern of learning. Nursery fees can be paid through School Comms, the school's preferred payment method. Cash and cheques are also accepted at the school office in an envelope labelled with the child's name and the payment's purpose.
