Tree climbing, storytelling and cooking outdoors characterised nursery life at Knowle West Early Years Centre at the April 2023 inspection. This maintained nursery school serves children aged 2 to 4 in Knowle West, Bristol, with provision that includes two-year-olds. Nursery education is the school's purpose, rather than an additional class within a primary school.
The April 2023 inspection found children happy and safe, with newcomers settling successfully and building trust in adults. Relationships were a strength at that inspection. Children showed consideration towards each other, took turns and played confidently, giving the nursery day a social dimension alongside its learning activities.
Language ran through the learning in April 2023. Adults built vocabulary through conversation, responding to children's curiosity and returning to words to strengthen understanding. New ideas were introduced through play, with children's interests helping shape the curriculum. For a young child, that connects learning to something they already want to explore.
Books provided another starting point at the April 2023 inspection. Children chose stories to share, discussed favourite characters and used imaginative play to explore what stories meant. Adults asked questions about what could happen next. Songs and rhymes added opportunities to practise language, and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) took part in conversations about books too.
In April 2023, the outdoor kitchen gave children practical tasks and a reason to learn how equipment worked safely. Trees provided climbing opportunities, while gardening, dance, drama and music broadened the experiences beyond story activities. Learning about festivals and celebrations introduced children to differences between people and communities.
Extending learning. In April 2023, assessment was not consistently used to select the right next challenge. Some children consequently developed their understanding less deeply than they could. The improvement priority was for staff to use assessment more effectively across the curriculum, so playful activities also move children's thinking forward.
In April 2023, emotional well-being shaped the curriculum, with attention to each child's individual needs and close relationships with families. Parents expressed strong approval of the care and guidance their children received. Successful settling and trusting relationships with adults supported children as they became familiar with nursery life.
Support for emotions also formed part of everyday interaction in April 2023. Adults recognised children who were finding behaviour or feelings difficult and helped them consider another person's perspective. Children offered comfort to upset peers. That gave turn-taking and kindness a practical place in the day.
At the April 2023 inspection, children's additional needs were identified early, and staff worked with other professionals to arrange support promptly. Safeguarding was effective in April 2023: staff received training to recognise concerns, recorded and reported them, and leaders checked new staff. Work with external agencies helped children and families receive timely assistance.
